"My friend and I went here for a lunch. We ordered jacket potatoes. They were hardly bigger than a boiled egg! Such a miserly size. I asked for beans, cheese and coleslaw. My potato came swimming in watery baked beans, the tiniest amount of cheese and coleslaw. My friend had a tiny potato with cheese and sachets of mayo. The quality of the food was cheap: Hard rough skinned and overcooked beans. Have you heard of Heinz? Cheap cash and carry mayo. Overcooked dried out potatoes. The waitress could see we had left most of our food and she asked if everything was ok. I replied No and explained. She looked shocked and flustered. She offered no apology. At the till the lady/owner looked equally embarrassed but offered no apology just took payment in full. Appalling customer service. A cheap café masquerading as a quality tearoom. Avoid if you want a decent meal."

Lovely food and the cake and dessert selection looked amazing. I’ve only given it three stars because the waitress was miserable

Traditional tea rooms with amazing sandwiches and other delicious treats. Highly recommend trying the baked potato with prawns, which comes with a generous mixed salad and plenty of prawns.

We popped in here a couple of times during our recent visit to Cockermouth, for coffee and tea cakes. A nice Cappuccino and very nice teacakes, with plenty of butter. We shall look forward to our next visit!

On our yearly visit to the lakes this lovely cafe is first on our list whilst in Cockermouth on this visit did not disappoint. We had a pot of tea,a latte, scone with butter, jam cream ,hubby had the carrot cake, both food drink up to their usual high standard. Lovely friendly staff who worked so hard as it was a busy day but never lost their smiles. We paid £8.80 for the above, more than reasonable in my opinion as the day before we had exactly the same in a cafe in Pooley Bridge there it cost us £13.

We are lucky to visit the northern lakes at least once a year and always include a half day in Cockermouth....and that always includes a trip to Beatfords. This place clearly has a loyal patronage from locals. And I can well understand why some tourists might not like it; its old-fashioned, dated and its been a long time since some money was spent on it....... but we love it. The food is great. I love one of their salads and my other half loves their Lemon Meringue which they kindly serve with 2 spoons ; Appreciated the outdoor seating when we visited this last July.

Lovely selection on the menu from breakfasts and light lunches to afternoon tea. Everything is freshly prepared and served very quickly which was great as we had limited parking on the street . We took cakes and scones out for later as we were too full after our delicious fresh ham salads. All the meals can be eaten in or take out and also tables can be booked. Lovely staff and dog friendly too, with a relaxing patio for outdoor dining in summer, there 's a lovely atmosphere in this quaint and bright little gem of a place ....definitely our 'go to 'place when were in Cockermouth. Stopped in here for lunch, good start with a cheery welcome confirming dog friendly status. There was ample staff around to manage the busy time of day, considering the publicity regarding a lack of available staff,we found the speed of service, and cheerful manner of all the ladies working, made a refreshing change,to some of the experiences recently. We had scrambled eggs on toast, and a full breakfast, both served very promptly and piping hot.Rounded off our lunch with an excellent homemade BlackBerry scone.Perhaps a good thing we live some distance away, would be here for tea and the cakes too frequently.

I used to frequent this place without incident by myself. the younger staff are great but the older staff look down their noses at me and my daughter Saskia. Saskia has extra needs her food needs to be cut up small to prevent choking and she has mayo with everything. They have small sachets and they begrudgingly give more than 2 sachets. The staff were overheard slagging me off in the kitchen regarding said mayo sachets on our last visit. They rolled their eyes when I asked for crusts to be removed. I didn’t dare ask for food to be cut up small too!. In short I said I wouldn’t be back and one lady said that it was a good idea that I didn’t! Disgusting!

"I would have loved to rate our dining experience at the Ivy House a lot higher but we were to leave somewhat disappointed. The dining area was pleasant and intimate with well appointed decor, the waitress and waiters pleasant, polite and attentive. The varied menu looked very appetising with most tastes catered for. We chose two courses from the main menu, the Duck Breast and a Fish Dish for myself. Contrary to other reviews we were to wait over 40 minutes before the food was presented to us. We were not advised of any delays or even the expected length of time we might have to wait. The food on arrival was well presented and flavoursome although I did not consider two small stem broccoli spears a serving. I also asked the waiter why there was no Samphire to accompany my dish as stated on the menu, this comment was also reinforced by a fellow diner who ate the same dish just prior to me. The waiter advised me that he would ask the chef. I did not receive a response to my question during further table service and subsequently asked the waiter again. On returning the waiter advised me the chef said “he will try to remember to put it on next time”, a somewhat disrespectful comment. The Cheese platter we were presented with was lacklustre and sparse, quince jelly and a small dish of chutney being the predominant feature. For ourselves we did not feel that our dining experience represented good value for money."
