"Booked last minute. Slightly concerned we could be fitted in so readily, surprisingly unbusy. Warmly welcomed, we had chicken pies and Sunday lunch, beef. Warmed plates, two generous slices of perfectly cooked beef, two roasties, yorkshire puds, mash and plenty of well presently veg. A huge boat of tasty gravy and another separate one for the chicken pies, which were also delicious. We had nothing to worry about, got lucky finding this pub. Excellent. Felt a little less pressurised into desserts, which we declined. A dessert board would be good, not everyone can afford, feels like or can fit one in. I'm sure they would have been equally delicious though. Would definitely recommend this pub. A friendly village pub atmosphere, great food, reasonably priced and nice landlord."

"Kitley house is a regular visit for us as we got married here 4 years ago. Our last visit in February this year was outstanding. I am so disappointed that I am not about to write another amazing review. I paid for a room to hold my gender reveal get together with family. A week or so prior I gave our pre orders as requested, however not sure why I was asked to do that when we were constantly asked what had been ordered. It just seemed no one knew what they were doing. The service was very slow, I understand they may not have wanted to rush us but you still expect to be asked if everything was ok and if we were ready for our mains etc. No one was particularly attentive and the food was just placed down each time and we wernt asked if we enjoyed it. I’ve had better service in a pub. Not what I expect from Kitley. Really disappointed and my family felt the same. Thought the service lacked. Real shame. I also mentioned when I booked weeks in advance that one family member was gluten intolerant to which they said they could adapt any of his chosen meals. When his food was placed in front of him he double checked with the waitress if it was gluten free to which her reply was “should be but not sure”. It was all very odd. He was then told he could only have the sorbet for dessert. We then suggested how they could adapt the panacotta to be gluten free. I just thought perhaps this would have been something they would have been familiar with. Didn’t seem anyone really cared enough. What more can I say other than what a complete shame."

"We had a lovely visit here last Saturday. Our food was made freshly to order and came out quickly despite the restaurant being very busy; there was a good selection to choose from; generous portions; and the staff were all friendly and polite. We had a walk around afterwards and bought some plants and lots of delicious food as well as a beautiful leather handbag. Sadly, upon reaching the till our visit was ruined by the smell and sight of a dog which had pooped all over the floor. Absolutely disgusting and made us both heave. There are clear signs everywhere saying no dogs allowed our main reason for visiting as we are sick and tired of being surrounded by dogs everywhere we visit. So why were they allowed in? The management must be prepared to enforce their rules upon these selfish and irresponsible dog owners who think they don't apply to them. We have stopped visiting both Endlseigh and Avon Mill garden centres for that very reason. I doubt we will be returning here now! Such a shame."

"We had previously visited and enjoyed our visit. I get the impression that it has changed management as it didn 't have the same friendly welcome as before. The 3 of us order meals and drinks, the 2 hot drinks came before the food but no sign of the iced coffee. We patiently waited as we could see they were busy at the till. When the food arrived, the lady didn 't ask if we had everything but I said excuse me, and explained we haven 't received one of the drinks. Her reply was I work in the kitchen in a disinterested tone and walked away. I then left my food to enquire about the drink. When the person who took our order arrived she didn 't apologise but said I 'll need to see it 's been put through the till. Making us feel like they thought we were trying to fraud them out of a drink! When the iced drink arrived with a 3rd member of staff they were nice but obviously unaware of the build up, so no apology was offered. The food was reasonably good and I would return but I definitely won 't because of the awful feeling created by the staff, completely ruining out meal. Sad really, I appreciate we all have bad days but don 't take it out on paying customers and expect them to return."

"We recently had a meal at The Anchor and could not fault it, the manager Vicky was lovely and very helpful, she recommended the fish Deli Board as a starter which was very nice, both our main courses were perfect as was the dessert/cheese board.Just the friendliness would make us want to return, Vicky and Mark have not been running it for very long but they certainly seen to have got things right ."

"A Monday night in September in Kingsbridge doesnt offer you a mass of choice however we stumbled on this gem of a real pub. Jill , the landlady was warm and friendly . The beer and wine were very acceptable , and on seeing several...locals pop in for take aways we decided to give the food a go ! We were not disappointed ! Fantastic steaks , beautifully cooked. So good was the experience here we went back on Friday for the Fish Chips we had the medium more than enough !! ) I dont care that the pub shuts at , thats their choice but a great value find that you should try !"

"Wow, what a find! A very unassuming cafe from the outside, but with a nice outside seating area and a cosy inside. We had a simple but lovely lunch with very kind and friendly service, but what really caught my attention was how welcoming they were to a number of late arrivals, even with a closed sign at the door. Everyone was greeted warmly and offered something despite the fact that the kitchen had closed. I only hope this review doesn’t create unreasonable expectations because I’m sure they were ready for a break by then!"

"Roni and I went here for a quick drink and ended up going back for most of our holiday. First of all the pub is as friendly to dogs as they are to us. Our wee man had a bit of a pant on and was served with a cold bowl of water and dog treats. As Roni is disabled we have to be careful where we go, but the landlady and staff could not have been more helpful. We ordered our drinks and asked for the menu. Roni had forgotten her glasses and yet again help was at hand with a box of reading glasses from behind the bar. The wine is of a very high quality and the beer is beautifully kept. Our food arrived very quickly, all home cooked and piping hot. All of our food was to the highest standard with beautiful ingredients. We were so impressed we were back the next day for our meal. Steak and Kidney pie was fantastic full to the brim with meat and the chilli Roni had was of the same amazing standard. This is a fantastic pub with great people and staff, if it was where we lived it would be our local make no mistake. Thank you very much for your hospitality."

"It's February half term and we had two kids and the dog in tow, everyone was hungry and it started to rain... but disaster was averted thanks to the Venus cafe! We were SO happy (and relieved) to come across this place! The food was delicious they have a really wide range of options from cheesy chips and decent chicken burgers to tacos and even crab bisque. The coffee was excellent, there were thick wedges of cake available, and a huge range of ice cream. Plus a really lovely seating area overlooking the surf, and water and biscuits for the dog. And smily helpful staff (thanks to Rachel, who was so lovely to our dog). There's not much better than when the whole family are happy and you're sitting in the warm with good food on a cold day, watching surfers and windsurfers and a few brave souls trying out the fliteboard (hydrofoil surf board). The surf rental place is next door if you're feeling brave. We enjoyed watching the sea tractor too it goes back and forth from Burgh Island (costs £2 a ride). Definitely a recommend the kids are still comparing other holiday food options to THOSE Venus cheesy chips. Next time we're in the area, we'll definitely be back."

"Avoid at all costs!!! Stayed for a night with work, wish I hadn’t. Greeted at 4:30pm by a drunk couple on the outside benches singing along to a Bluetooth speaker. (This later turned out to be the landlady) Bar staff couldn’t be less interested in showing us to our rooms. Also seemed an inconvenience us being there. I stay away regularly for work and I can honestly say this was the worst room I have ever stayed in. Stunk of damp, PVC decking ceiling (I assume to hide damp) carpet coming up around all edges, handles falling off cupboards, towels like sandpaper, silicone hanging off entry step to shower, black grout which used to be black. Revolting."

Castle Barton

"My wife and I always like to go out for a Christmas meal before the big day – and Castle Barton never lets us down! The food is traditional home cooked produce served by smiling and friendly waitresses, the quality and quantity was just superb; and as I said to the Chef afterwards: “It was just like my Mum’s cooking!” – to which he replied that his Mum had taught him to cook and that was just what he always aimed for .. traditional home cooked food. The dining room was decorated in a beautiful and traditional way with no gaudy flashing lights but a picturesque scene of the 12 days of Christmas in one corner, and ornate décor around the warming open log fire. I cannot fault anything and the price for the two of us was incredible, long may Castle Barton be there to serve the local community (we are from Marldon! PS: I hope they soon manage to get the access lighting up the front path sorted – the rain and wetness gets into everything!"

"During our week-long holiday in Dartmouth, we decided to try out Bushell's Upper Deck after reading some great reviews. It was a pop-up restaurant and we happened to visit on its last night of the summer season. Despite the limited menu, we were warmly welcomed and had a fantastic meal. We started with squid and garlic flatbread, followed by seafood risotto and American pizza, and finished with tiramisu and ice cream. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the views were incredible. We definitely lucked out with this choice! Thank you Bushell's Upper Deck!"

"What a disappointment! If you read the other reviews you would not think we went to the same place. We had booked in advance for Sunday lunch. Not everything was available and they only have 4 things on the menu it arrived barely warmed through on plastic plates. Nothing appeared to have been cooked from fresh. They took it away and reheated it. If you can’t cook don’t offer food! They offered a free desert in recompense but frankly if the mains were a yardstick of their cooking ability they wouldn’t be worth the wait we all declined. No offer of a free drink or discount was made poor show. Never again."

"Came across Bistro when searching for a place to go for a date night whilst on holiday. Not knowing the area at all apart from guide books and driving through the little town, we decided (with the help of reviews) that we'd give this...place a try. As it was a Thursday evening the town was almost silent and the Bistro quiet. Straight away Annabelle the owner greeted us like she'd know us for ages which was lovely and sorted out drinks out straight away. They bar/lounge area is exactly what we love in that it is quirky, cozy and almost like a living room. Vicky decided on a G&T and I went with a double rum and coke which went down very nicely. The menu was basic but all food homemade. I went with the fish pie and Vick went with slow cooked beef and mashed potato. Both of us loved what we had and it was worth the trip out from where we were staying. The bar was quite busy when we headed back in. A mix of locals and regulars which created a nice ambience. We chatted with Annabelle for quite a while afterwards about our holiday and the places we had visited etc. It really was a lovely evening and we'd recommend a trip here to anyone who is staying in and around the area."

"10 of us ate last night 7 adults and 3 children. The whole experience felt really personalised and special. Richard's communication was excellent from booking through to the night and followup. The food itself was exquisite. I had been told this was one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Devon and I have to see I agree. Every one of us found something to love on the menu and the attention to detail was excellent. A would thoroughly recommend Plantation House Restaurant."

"This restaurant is a terrible place to eat. We did not have a reservation and were seated at tables near the bar. We waited almost 20 minutes for our meals, which arrived lukewarm. The lady who served us seemed friendly, but the pub was scruffy and dated, with unprofessional staff. The chef, who appeared to be foreign, came out of the kitchen before our meal, swearing and complaining about his colleagues instead of focusing on our food. This may explain why our meals were cold and bland. As someone who has worked in catering for 17 years in similar and higher-rated establishments, I was appalled by this unprofessional behavior in front of customers. My order was loaded with cinnamon and star anise, making me question if anyone there knew how to make authentic barbecue sauce. The carpets felt sticky and the clientele consisted mostly of loud, intoxicated salesmen in the middle of the day. The atmosphere was dark and uninviting. We will not be returning to this restaurant, as it left a very negative impression."

"We popped a across the water from Dartmouth to have a look around and pick up some slate. As I am on a disability scooter I am a little restricted and we did not get as far as the section that housed the bags of stones, however I knew what I wanted so a very helpful staff memeber/gentleman offered to get them and take them to the tills. So we bought a few bedding plants and bulbs and headed for the cafe. Unfortunately the coffee machine was just being commissioned with the staff learning how to use it. We said we would wait and have a Cheese Scone whilst waiting as we were told it would only be 10 mins or less. It turned out to be nearly 20 but we were happy to wait. The Scones where delicious and pretty big. We had finished when Donna came across to ask if we still required a hot drink and would we be happy to be Guinea pigs. We asked for Mocha and soon after they arrived one was a full mug the other not so but this was the 1st 2 cups out and obviously the second mug was correct ratio etc. We both enjoyed and commented how nice they were although a little sweet for us. Probably one of the best we've had. So congrats on getting a superb machine and what a pleasant experience with friendly staff. Thanks Donna. When we got to the checkout our bags of slate were ready and a young lady brought them to the car and even put them in the bot for me. Thank you."

"we come back to the winking prawn year for year. fantastic ambiente, delicious eating, great service and so hard working people there. it is from breakfast all the way to late evening dinner and it is always clean and tidy and welcoming. they have a fantastic call winkng prawn, we are from gloucestershire and many people already know it there! we will come back, thank you. a piece of heaven!"

"Great variety menu and the portions were huge for the money. Can’t fault it as we were a table of 8 and it was really quite busy in there even though a Monday and we hardly had to wait at all. The lasagna was huge, great chips, I had vegan cottage pie which was lentils and veggies, piping hot and was very good actually. Pie was great and scampi. New owners since the pandemic ended and I think they’ve done very well. Great food, huge portions and lots of hand gel stations so they’re doing all they can. Few picnic tables outside end you can just watch everyone also. I’d definitely go again."

"J'ai emmené ma mère au restaurant Two Sisters pour son anniversaire dimanche dernier. Nous avons été immédiatement accueillis et informés des options de brunch (c.-à-d. Buffet par rapport aux offres spéciales de brunch et autres ajustements, tels que le bacon de dinde au lieu du porc). Je pense que c'est un endroit idéal pour un brunch décontracté et certainement pour un rendez-vous mère-fille. Nous avons adoré la nourriture et le service. Nous avons roulé vers un Groupon et nous reviendrons certainement sans Groupon. Ça vaut le coup."
