"The history of this pub is fascinating, riddled with tales of contraband, black market dealings and possible bewitchings. I’m more than slightly spooked to confirm that dirty dealings are alive and well at the Dog and Shepherd to this day. After trying to enjoy an expensive but mostly edible Sunday lunch while my two kids made gravy potions, adjusted the pub decor and eschewed their fish chips in favour of eating old food off the floor, we gave up and rammed the remains into cardboard boxes to eat later and left our table clean for the next group. These guys operate a tight ship on Sundays, woe betide you should you overstay your welcome thankfully we didn’t! That, ladies and gentlemen, was where the post dining entertainment on the terrace began we were told that we’d be charged a hefty fee for extra people who were never even part of the group booking!! An honest mistake, a mixup on comms, easily resolved you say? Not here. Instead, we were treated to the most aggressive, threatening performance by the main guy ‘Steve’ who mentioned calling the police more than once and spun a web of lies so baffling that I think we’re all a little concerned for his health. Honestly the most shocking experience ever! Sending strength to the team who work here.. and pray for Steve! Really though, watch you don’t get stung by incorrect charges on group bookings here by clarifying everything in writing NOT over the phone we lost close to £100 despite spending nearly four times that and we were treated horribly which has left a nasty taste in quite a few mouths. Such a shame!"

"Oh dear. We came with friends children and adults all together. Our waiter seemed rather grumpy. He told us that dishes were not available. When we ordered he then told us some more dishes were not available. We ordered children’s...meals. The wait was fine. Our drinks were all correct. The food arrived and the children’s pasta was simple and they enjoyed it. The portion size was just about enough. At the cost little under I would say it was really overpriced. The children’s burger looked fine. It could come with a bit of cucumber and tomato for the price. The chips were very below par just like oven chips. The children’s fish and chips was a good size. The adults meals were varying the fish and chips was a good size. The sausage and mash wasn’t great the meat was nice but the mash was overloaded and the green beans a very small portion. My husband asked for more veggies instead of chips with his steak and they said they only have green beans at the moment which was fine but a bit limited. My friend asked for chicken Caesar salad with the dressing on the side and it came with it on the salad. When she told them they said we hadn’t asked for it on the side which we had. They offered no solution. Small portion too for a salad for All in all, portion sizes very variable, very overpriced, pretty mediocre food and grumpy service and lots of the menu not available. The waiter didn’t wear a mask either which is unusual to see and considering he will be customer facing all day it doesn’t in-still confidence."

"I’ve been enjoying meals at this spot every 2 3 months for years now. Unfortunately on my most recent visit, the quality of food has dropped slightly, and isn’t as enjoyable as it used to be. The starters were decent, especially the olives : they were absolutely delicious and very well seasoned. The smoke salmon filled balls weren’t that special and I wouldn’t really recommend them at a French brassiere. The calamari were obviously not fresh, and honestly not that enjoyable either at, once again, a FRENCH restaurant. The bread is always quite tasty with the butter and a good simple starter to order. The highlight undoubtedly is the onion soup though, it’s consistently quite tasty and even though I never have it because I personally don’t like onions, the party I’m with always recommend and rightfully so. For mains, I’m an expert in the Steak Frites, and I have to say the quality has dropped. It wasn’t pleasant to see chargrill marks on a steak frites which shouldn’t be cooked in that way, and the meat itself felt cheap and tacky. They never used to cook it this way, and it’s a real shame because you end up walking away with a rubbery piece of meat rather than what used to be a relatively enjoyable steak. The duck, on the other hand, looked brilliant for a chain restaurant: it was tender and not too ****. If I were to eat here tomorrow that is what I’d order for sure. The salad which was ordered was fresh, however it was plastered with unnecessary bits of lettuce scattered around the plate to a standard you’d see in a Costco takeaway box of salad not very impressive. The standard of food is never that high, as you would expect at every chain restaurant these days, even though I here their breakfast/brunch is quite enjoyable, but what really ties the experience together is the staff and service. They’re very nice, and understanding, and always up for a nice chat whether that be explaining the menu items or a talk about the premier league matches that are being played on a Saturday. The service in terms of food is not that fast unless you SPECIFY for them to bring everything out as soon as it’s ready, which if you don’t do: they will bring food out as if it were a 3 course meal. In summary they’re all very nice and chatty. In conclusion, if you’re looking for something quick last minute, then this isn’t a terrible place to go. The restaurant is never that buys these days and finding a table should be relatively easy if you please."
