"Our first visit to the Sportsman for Sunday lunch today was a very memorable one. Having seen roast dinners arrive at other tables we just had to indulge. Before we get to that though, I have to mention how welcoming and accommodating the restaurant team were. They were also never far away to help us with refills and enjoy the occasion. The restaurant itself was very spacious, warm and comfortable enough that we were able to enjoy a long, enjoyable visit. Now we get to the food. On top of the usual roast chicken and beef offerings were also pork and lamb, and some of us chose to go for a mix. I had beef and lamb. Roasts come with veggies, roast potatoes, a large Yorkshire pud, and lots of gravy. Note: chicken can’t be mixed due to it being in large pieces. We also chose to add extra sides of cauliflower, cheese and piggies in blankets. The food arrived after a little while, but we were busy chatting anyway, enjoying the atmosphere. The plates arrived hot, and they both looked and tasted amazing. If you have a healthy appetite and a taste for good food, you definitely won’t be disappointed. Go there soon!! Next time we must try dining in one of the outside wood cabins for a more personal surrounding. They looked great!!"

We booked one of the pods and it was cosy and warm. The food was delicious. All dishes tried were tasty and well presented. The service was faultless. Highly recommended.

We held a wake for about 120 people at the Sportsman and the staff could not have been helpful, understanding and kind. The food and service was first class. Every one commented on how could the event was, and we are vert grateful. Voir le carte

If you're in search of a classic country pub with delicious food, this is the place to go. The festive atmosphere with cozy log fires and Christmas decorations added to the charm. The food was delicious and well-presented, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We had a great evening and are very grateful!

We were a group of twelve on a Christmas family outing, which included four children and individuals with dietary restrictions such as vegan and dairy-free options. We had pre-ordered our meals for 12:45, but due to a route-blocking accident, we did not sit down until 2:15pm. The staff were very understanding and accommodating. The food was excellent, and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. A big thank you to all of you for a job well done.

For our meal, we ordered the roast pork and roast beef with sides of pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese. The food arrived hot and freshly prepared, with tender and delicious meats. The crackling on the pork was thin, light, and super crispy. Despite our hearty appetites, we struggled to finish our meal, as it was so satisfying. We observed that even larger groups were efficiently served, which impressed us. We would highly recommend dining at The Sportsman for a delicious Sunday roast treat without the hassle of cooking. We’re local but hadn’t been for a long time. As we were passing we decided to call in for lunch and were very glad we did. We were early on a lunchtime and were seated near to one of the fires as it was really cold outside. We had the Welsh rarebit with bacon and eggs extras, plus the lamb’s liver with mash and onion gravy. Both dishes were served quickly, were very tasty, and piping hot. We decided we’d make the effort to come back again soon, especially as the service was efficient and friendly. Overall a very nice lunch although my pint of Harveys wasn’t brilliant. It wasn’t bad and didn’t warrant being sent back but i hope it’s better next time.

We thought we would go for a mid week lunch as we are still on holiday. We walk 45 minutes to get there (along the pretty circular walking path) so don’t have time to go there as often as we would like as the walk back is another 45 minutes and it’s just finding the time! The starter of calamari was not available but there was whitebait instead which was lovely and had a spicy kick to the seasoning. The burgers were still amazing. GF bun available. Perfectly cooked. So tender and tasty. Fries not over seasoned and not too much rosemary. Lovely. Pudding of treacle tartlet was really a change from a treacle tart. Great lunch. Lovely G T with Brighton Gin, Brighton rock and Mediterranean gin. T...

"We go to Gravetye 3 or 4 times a year if we can and have been going for many many years over the tenures of several owners. It 's always a complete joy, and the current owner has done a fabulous job of getting the right people in, both inside and out. Tom Coward, the Head Gardener (ex. Dixter) has a vision and a long term plan that make continual visits over an extended period a joy every time we visit we are surprised by the continual changes we learn so much and the garden staff are super helpful and willing to discuss what they 're up to and why. The amazing oval massive kitchen garden that supplies the hotel is a source of wonderment and not to be missed. A visual and culinary feast. We 've never stayed there as we live reasonably close, but have eaten in both the old and new dining rooms many times. The new dining room sits harmoniously between the wings of the manor and although a very modern glass and steel construction, the inclusion of a fabulous antique (and uneven) parquet floor (ex. some french chateau) softens the feel and acoustics, making the room almost intimate. The floor to ceiling windows bring you right into the garden, even in the foulest of weather it 's a triumph of design. Then there 's the food. Apart from the presentation, which is exquisite, the flavours and textures always bring a broad grin, however grumpy I am! This is absolutely first rate British cuisine; the kitchen under Head Chef George Blogg is to be commended, as are the garden staff producing the freshest of produce. I occasionally try to photograph the plates, but invariably find I 've forgotten that rather crass move and have just launched in! Must also mention the front of house staff. Perfectly presented and mannered, they know exactly the boundary between staff and guest and make you feel completely comfortable and relaxed there is nothing stuffy or obsequious about Gravetye everything is pitched just spot on and nothing is too much trouble. We were there today for a birthday treat, but will be back again soon for a post family wedding get together. Cannot recommend too highly just an excellent few hours, whatever the weather. Walkability: Lots of paths. The lower areas are easy for those with limited mobility, however it might be tricky to get up to the kitchen garden if you 're not great on your feet. Food drinks: See my review."
