"I am from the south of england, but regularly visit friends who live near tarporley. before today's visit (february 2022) was my recent visit to the rising sun november 2021, when I was served by a sullen young barman who could not welcome...we let alone offer a smile. Today my experience was much worse than I tried to order lunch. I am a 61-year-old businessman who has traveled all over the world and has eaten in restaurants in the uk and in the country for over 30 years. I know what I can and can eat, I am not a juvenile, but was treated today in the rising sun as such. I have tried to explain to the waitress that I am not a zöliakie, but rather some gluten intolerance (which is really just too much processed white bread). she refused to submit my order for a burger with gluten-free bread without control with the chef. I tried to order a chicken stable, but this order was also rejected, instead I was asked to awaken by a huge multi-page document of a matrix any known intolerance for the human to make a choice. I refused at what time the cook came to my table to say he was also general manager and that this was the social policy. I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life. he said he could offer me a sandwich bark in a gluten-free bread. at this point I was so unfurnished as to be treated a child or worse a stencil that I paid for my drinks and went. the only redeeming feature of this sad story of the misguided service is that I then crossed the road to enjoy an excellent lunch package that was good with friendly and responsive service on the coast. I would advise others to do the parades of the rising sun too."

Da Noi

Da Noi

"The most authentic Italian experience you can find outside of Italy. Da Noi is possibly the most delicious Italian food I have ever had in the UK since I moved here back in 2009. This is a place where the owners run the whole business and everything they do is with pride, passion and love just like high quality family run restaurants in Italy. Now, let's get to the food and drinks! I started off with a gigantic home made light and thin pasta raviolo filled with ricotta cheese and an egg yolk that explodes out when cut in half finished with a porcini mushrooms sauce and truffle oil. The aroma of the porcini and truffle mixed wonderfully with the creaminess of the yolk and the delicious pasta filling. Be aware, you can even order this as a MAIN!!! Together with my starter I ordered a white floral wine from Piemonte called Baratuciat... one word: divine. As a main, I ordered the venison cooked medium rare juicy and tender as it should be, together with a light almond sauce and dauphinoise. Once again, I followed the instructions and gone with the pairing choice, a fruity Barbaresco that enhanced all the flavours on the plate. Amazing. Of course, I had to try a dessert too, so I went for the super traditional Piemontese pudding called Bunet a sort of creme caramel hyped up with coca and amaretti biscuits. Again, hats off. My friend had the same dishes except for the main where he opted for the incredibly succulent and aromatic pheasant. At the end, while sipping an espresso in truly Italian fashion, we had the pleasure to spend some time with owners Valentina, who is the genius mastermind behind the food menu, and Fabrizio, who is incredibly charming and knowledgeable when choosing the wines. Grazie ragazzi, we are very jealous Chester got you! Fil Andrea Vegetarian options: One option in the starters and two options in the mains. It goes without saying these aren't after thoughts vegetarian options :"

The Stables

"I like to write good reviews and celebrate good food. I'm afraid our experience of this place did not live up to expectations. We chose The Stables based on Tripadvisor reviews and because we like Greek food. Our reservation was mid-week for 20:00. We arrived...at the restaurant a few minutes earlier and were asked to wait in the waiting area. The reception girl brought us menus, which we saw as a good sign hoping that the service will be quick. We made our food and drinks order. The restaurant has Cypriot wines on the menu. I am currently off alcohol so I asked for a ginger beer, not available. OK, any zero alcohol beer or wine. Not available. OK, I will drink sparkling mineral water. Not available. The best was yet to come. After 15 minutes of waiting we were shown to our table. There was no one else in the restaurant. Another party of 6 arrived soon after. The restaurant was freezing. We sat next to a radiator, which was hot but the place was freezing. Was the heating switched on when we arrived? The other table did not bother taking their coats off. After some time we were served with a piece of toasted bread each and olives, which was nice. Then we were waiting for our starters. The reception girl/waiter was going to the kitchen and back and we jokingly said that she is probably the one who cooks as well. 45 minutes later our starters arrived (20:45), which was consisted of toasted pita bread, hummus, tzatziki, grilled Halloumi and mushrooms in gravy. Hummus was bland, tzatziki did not have any cucumber in it. By that time we were really hungry so we did not complain about the slow service or lack of flavour and just ate. We were putting high hopes for our mains: 2 x Fish Meze, Meat Meze and a Moussaka. Half an hour or so later the Moussaka arrived. Then the waiter and the chef came to our table to explain there there was a mix up and instead of 2 Fish Meze the chef cooked 2 Meat Mezes. OK, I will have a Meat Meze instead! I am so hungry, just give me some food! So we had 3 our of 4 mains on our table. The Fish Meze arrived 15 minutes later, to everyone's relief. I watched my friend taking shells off the beautiful grilled prawns. No lemon water bowl or wet wipes were provided to clean your hands. She ate her prawns and squid rings, which were nice but she had to leave halibut and sea-bass because the fish had strong smell. I told my friend if she is not enjoying her food she should send it back and complain. Our Meat Mezes looked really good but were somehow flavourless. Having travelled to Cyprus, mainland Greece and other Greek islands we know how Greek food tastes. This food did not taste Greek or Cypriot: not seasoned enough, not enough herbs, just bland. English version of Greek food? Not sure. At the end of the evening the chef/owner had a cheek to come to the table to ask how our food was. We told him the fish had a smell. He explained to us this is because it is very fresh as he sources it from the local fish market every day at 4:30 in the morning. Was it left out of the fridge all day? The owner offered a glass of wine on the house at which point we just wanted to leave. No discount or refund was offered. To summarise: a traumatic experience, freezing room, expensive and bland food, a very slow service with lots of mistakes. We do not know how this place got a Certificate of Excellence in 2015, they probably had a good chef and more stuff then. Our compliments to the reception girl/waiter, she tried to save the situation but it was not possible. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this restaurant and it is definitely not #1 in Scunthorpe."

"It pains me to give a low rating as I really enjoy the food and drink from here, however the service is a bit lacking which really lets it down. Beautiful surroundings, really enjoy sitting outside but it could be so much better. There is a young chap who only wears his mask over his mouth and is the slowest moving barista known to man. He can have a crowd waiting for drinks but still stop and take time to just stand still and look around, study the ceiling and slowly pick things up to make coffees and drinks. Instead of getting on and making coffees despite a long queue he waited doing absolutely nothing as a colleague checked in the back for a gingerbread man to top a coffee (start making another order while you wait surely??? . I’m not expecting the efficiency of Starbucks here (who at least have some energy about them but my receipt showed the time I ordered and there is a digital clock behind the till. All he had to make after his gingerbread lattes, were two oat milk coffees before he got to my two drinks (I know this because I watched his slow movements with eagerness and the time it took from ordering to picking my drinks up off the counter was 19 minutes. I don’t visit the hollies to stand at the counter for almost 20 minutes. It is not the first time that I’ve brought my food/drink out to my waiting family and said “it’s lovely here but wow they are slow”. Again, it’s a shame because the drinks are delicious and the food/cakes wonderful and I know most of the staff are lovely. Only other comments are that I’d really appreciate a place where you could pick up some napkins, extra sugars, stirrers, etc. We always need a napkin but never have one and there doesn’t appear to be anywhere to get them. Also some labels on the cakes to say what they are and prices (including allergy info the cashier/barista can rarely hear what you are asking/saying when you are trying to shout over a coffee machine, through a plastic screen with a mask on."
