"As a regular diner at the White Gate over the years, I have seen many of its ups and downs. Management and staff have come and gone. I have seen it change hands from company to company, however quite recently something has happened to the place.Me and my wife were very intrigued by the introduction of the newest menu yet, brought in during the first week of november. And we were not disappointed. The portions have become bigger, the prices have come down (yes, down quite considerably. Yet strangely, the quality has increased drastically. I had the mixed grill, not expecting that not only is the steak bigger (and a whole lot nicer), you also get more with it in the way of plate fillers, corn on the cob, mushrooms etc. My steak was cooked to perfection. My wife had their surf and turf, which also looked, smelled and (by all accounts) tasted fantastic. The plates were huge, warm and very well presented. As the main course had overfaced me, my wife had the only dessert the giant chocolate fudge cake, which speaks for itself. Once again, the presentation was excellent. We even had a drink thrown in with the price of the meal as it was their Buy a grill and get a free drink' day.The staff were extremely friendly, polite, professional and obviously well-trained. We were surprised by their knowledge of the menu contents, and were made immediately aware of the daily deals. The only bad point was the disruption from the neighboring table, although completely beyond the control of the staff or management. All in all, a great place to dine. People say you get what you pay for, although here you receive much, much more. The current manager has certainly done something right in very little time for us to have noticed such a positive change. A restaurant on the way up for sure!"

a beautiful pub. amazing personal, tasty and inexpensive eating. we had silly and chile con carne, I just wish there was a greater selection of real ales. there is always a blonde and a bitter but beautiful. highly recommended for a bite to eat and a drink while in the opposite!

We are local, first visit and last visit. People who ordered their meal after us were getting served first, we thought we had been forgotton. The coffee arrive mins after the beer, foggy beer, coffee like it was from a greasy spoon, just in a mug no saucer. The masala was straight out of a jar, chicken was tough and very poorly presented. like a slop house) nan was burnt and dry. Mixed grill, chicken was cold and thrown on as an after thought. The bar was like the mary celeste, only one teenage girl running it rushed off her feet, min wages probs too. Outstandingly bad. No sizzlers? Shame really they stopped doing it. Oh and the menus online were totally different to the menus in house, I wa...

I have been a customer at the White Gate for many years. I have seen its ups and downs, managers have come and gone. Since very recently, when the current manager arrived, me and my wife were sceptic at first, but curious to give the place a try. And am I glad I tried it? A resounding yes! The launch of the new menu in the first week of November re-introduced the quailty and value of the good old days. I was particularly pleased to see the return of the sizzling plates (although I am led to believe they are not a part of the original sizzlers chain). My steak was perfect, the chips were golden and the peas were fresh green. The size of the new mixed grill overfaced me, yet still the price is...

as a regular diner on white tor about the years I have seen many of its heights and deep. management and staff have come and gone. "Arrived slightly early for our meal and were shown to our table. The pub was almost empty with just another table occupied and a man at the bar. We were asked for our drink order before we had even sat down. The drinks then took an age to come and we could see them on the end of the bar. What the staff were doing when when there was hardly anyone else in is beyond me. Drinks finally delivered. Menu choices were taken some 10 minutes later and the starters arrived aound 15 minutes later. The scallops were tasty especially the crispy chorizo. My husband had the goats cheese which was served with beetroot puree. He said this was tasteless with no taste of beetroot at all. We then sat and waited for the plates to be taken away, and waited, and waited. We also had no drinks left either so needed to re order. It was at this point I thought I would check Trip Advisor to see if anyone else had complained about the incredibly slow service. How I wish we had checked this before and not whilst sat at the table. The latest review was shocking and we were alarmed to see that the pub had only been given a 1 star rating for hygiene by the council inspectors, with the contributor claiming to have suffered food poisoning from the meal. The waitress finally came after 20 minutes and removed our starter plates and took our drink reorder. Main courses arrived I had the ceasar salad as it was an exceptionally hot humid evening. The salad came served in a bowl which had been heated.!! This meant that the lettuce was somewhat limp however, it was tasty overall but certainly not worth the £15 it cost. My husband ordered the 10oz 32 day aged Sirloin Steak, which cost £27. As he orders steak wherever we go, he does know his cuts of steak and did comment that this was a rather cheap cut of meat and had a lot of gristle in it, to the point he left a good quarter of the steak uneaten. Also, everything was coated in salt. The chunky chips were incredibly salty, so was the steak and even the mushrooms were salted. He ordered a glass of Merlot to accompany the steak and this cost a eye watering £8.75..!! We have been here before, although a long time ago and whether it has changed hands since then, I dont know but although the meal was okay, the atmosphere, ambience and the service were terrible. We had intended on having a dessert as this was our wedding anniversary meal but just decided to pay and leave. The bill was over £80 for 2 courses and 2 drinks each (2 of these were soft drinks). We will not be returning and unlikely to recommend."
