"It was the first time that we had visited to eat at this pub for many, many years and it still isn 't great. The service was quite poor as the lady that was serving just couldn 't get the orders for food or drinks right as she insisted on not using a pad (written, or electronic! to keep our orders on, so I had to remind her on several occasions of what we required after having waited around 20 minutes to get service with only 4 tables in her section. The food was pretty average: Supermarket standard pates and a small prawn cocktail that was inevitably from the freezer. Main courses weren 't much better. A hunters chicken that looked pretty tired, a sea bream that was again from the freezer and was well overcooked, delivered whole and without any offer to filet it and two mixed grills that were actually quite good, although a half salad option would have been helpful instead of the mound of chips. Pudding was okay and quite generous but overall there wasn 't enough to make up for the poor service and quality of food. We were very fortunate that this was a 30% off deal as it still cost £25- per head and otherwise would have been £32-50 each, without wine and with only two pints! This is NOT a gastro pub, yet it charges those prices. If you want gastro then go to the Gardeners Arms in Ardingly where those prices are justified. The other let-down is the standard of some people in there. It appears that there is a 'yob ' contingent that finds it amusing to belch as loudly as possible and comment on it to each other, in the loudest possible voices. Scum like that need to be given one warning, then barred."

Terrible service and food. Burnt pitta bread. Waited ages for replacement which wasn't same type of bread! Wine plonked on table and not even opened. Location only good thing. Keep seeing bad reviews but nothing done about it. Rubbish.

Very disappointed for the following reasons. 1. Booking had not been received....they said. 2. We would have preferred to be seated in a warmer corner. 3. We ordered two pizzas for my grandchildren.....they could only give us one. 4. Service was very slow, altho the restaurant wasn't too busy.. 5. When my daughters steak sandwich came, it was cold. It was sent back twice to be heated. this took a long time, by which time the rest of us had finished our main meal. 6. We ordered 2 sweets, which again took a long time. 7. The table was left with dirty glasses. by which time my husband had had enough and cancelled the sweets and complained to the management. In the end. they didn't charge for my...

"We go to Gravetye 3 or 4 times a year if we can and have been going for many many years over the tenures of several owners. It 's always a complete joy, and the current owner has done a fabulous job of getting the right people in, both inside and out. Tom Coward, the Head Gardener (ex. Dixter) has a vision and a long term plan that make continual visits over an extended period a joy every time we visit we are surprised by the continual changes we learn so much and the garden staff are super helpful and willing to discuss what they 're up to and why. The amazing oval massive kitchen garden that supplies the hotel is a source of wonderment and not to be missed. A visual and culinary feast. We 've never stayed there as we live reasonably close, but have eaten in both the old and new dining rooms many times. The new dining room sits harmoniously between the wings of the manor and although a very modern glass and steel construction, the inclusion of a fabulous antique (and uneven) parquet floor (ex. some french chateau) softens the feel and acoustics, making the room almost intimate. The floor to ceiling windows bring you right into the garden, even in the foulest of weather it 's a triumph of design. Then there 's the food. Apart from the presentation, which is exquisite, the flavours and textures always bring a broad grin, however grumpy I am! This is absolutely first rate British cuisine; the kitchen under Head Chef George Blogg is to be commended, as are the garden staff producing the freshest of produce. I occasionally try to photograph the plates, but invariably find I 've forgotten that rather crass move and have just launched in! Must also mention the front of house staff. Perfectly presented and mannered, they know exactly the boundary between staff and guest and make you feel completely comfortable and relaxed there is nothing stuffy or obsequious about Gravetye everything is pitched just spot on and nothing is too much trouble. We were there today for a birthday treat, but will be back again soon for a post family wedding get together. Cannot recommend too highly just an excellent few hours, whatever the weather. Walkability: Lots of paths. The lower areas are easy for those with limited mobility, however it might be tricky to get up to the kitchen garden if you 're not great on your feet. Food drinks: See my review."
