"The Whipper Inn is a classic example that demonstrates that you can’t judge a book by its cover. From the outside, it’s a beautiful sandstone building in a very lovely Rutland town, lots of passing Hunter wellied locals and Oakham visitors and enough ‘good life’...appeal to make a lunchtime visit more than just a well heeled fuel stop. So why haven’t the management recognised exactly what a gem they have and tapped into their unique selling point a quintessential, honey stoned English coaching inn, rich in Rutland country culture ? This hostelry is very confused about who and what it is to the point of having multiple personality disorder. Reception dark oak, white emulsion and I feel the need to write artificial flowers, bar/ restaurant birch wonky tables and Iaminate floors? All very odd. This level of confusion applied to the staff and level of service too. Walking into reception, as the door to the bar from the market place was locked, we were greeted with surprise by the receptionist when we said we’d booked a table for lunch. We were the only diners at that time. The receptionist then became our waiter ... eventually. Again, stressed and confused. The menu was very limited and basic ... we hoped this was a sign of something special (kept simple so the chef could focus on a thoughtful menu, quality local ingredients and exquisite presentation a fine dining experience perhaps ? the lunchtime menu prices would lead you to this conclusion) but how wrong we were. ‘ gin battered fish and chips’ ?? ‘Lemon tart’ both tasted like ‘mums been to Iceland’ .... complete with ice crystals and a soggy bottom on the tart !!! Service was appalling various requests were ignored, forgotten or just not heard. We ate quickly, paid begrudgingly and left without anyone even acknowledging that we were even there. A sad disappointment in every way. Such a shame ."

On a quiet Saturday night we dined at the bistro, warm and cosy on a cold night The barman/waiter was excellent, very friendly and helpful and recommended the salmon and smoked haddock fishcake which was delicious. Good local beer and reasonably priced wine accompanied our...meal. We would definitely eat here again.

Dined with a group that had pre-ordered food. Two meals did not materialise and the staff did not notice! When this was pointed out, food was eventually produced, but one of the meals had obviously been quickly cooked and was raw. By this time all...the staff had disappeared and we had to go into the bar to find anyone. Eventually this meal was replaced, long after everyone else had finished theirs.

After wandering around and initially being overlooked by the manager sitting behind a comical plastic COVID screen at the reception, I was finally recognized by a polite front of house staff member. The dinner only had bread slices and the chef refused to make any more bread since I didn't order curry. The manager seemed more concerned about finding "my scissors" than providing good service. The food was decent, but the fried fish looked overcooked. The overall experience was not welcoming and felt more like an afterthought.

After waiting for over an hour to be seated, we felt rushed once we finally sat down at our table. We were the only customers in the restaurant, so it seemed like we had inconvenienced the staff. The service was lacking as the waitstaff seemed inexperienced and unsure of how to properly serve and present dishes. They often reached over one of us to serve food to the person sitting on the other side of the table. The soft drinks were overpriced, with a pint of Pepsi costing more than expected. Additionally, the coffee we ordered came in a teapot for two, but it was very weak.

The Whip-In seems to be lacking in attracting customers. It appears they are not doing much to entice people to dine there. I remember when I was younger, the restaurant was called the George Bar and it was always packed with customers. Perhaps the Whip-In should consider changing back to a bar and offering happy hour specials, drinks, and free shots to attract more patrons. It seems clear that people are not interested in dining there currently. They should focus on implementing promotions and incentives to bring people back in. Once they start to attract customers, their friends will likely follow suit. The Whip-In needs to come up with new ideas to attract customers and start getting peo...

We both ordered a ribeye steak for the main course med rare When the steaks came one was ok the other was well done. We pointed this out to the waiter and he didn’t think it was too bad and asked what we wanted to...do. We asked him to speak to the chef and explain how disappointed and to come back to us. We carried on eating and he never came back. We asked again at the end of the meal and he said he had told the chef who said sorry. We asked why he didn’t come back to us and he said he was very busy. We also explained that it wasn’t rib-eye but sirloin. He said he could tell the difference and offered us a pudding. We did not take up the offer. We asked for the chef to come and explain but...
