"We had enough of German food, so we decided to do Italian for a change. Il Monastero was close to our hotel and had a 4 1/2 star rating in Trip Advisor so we gave it a try. We were not disappointed. This is the real deal. The restaurant is run by an Italian family that has brought their family recipes to Germany. We started with the boiled octopus in olive oil and lemon. It was cooked perfectly and so soft, it almost melted in your mouth. Followed by the pasta de la casa (spaghetti with veal in a light cream/tomato sauce and the spaghetti al mare. The pasta was al dente as one would expect and the sauces were perfect. The sea food in the al mare was, of course not what you would get in Sicily or in a coastal Italian town, but they had some fresh mussels, shrimp and fresh vongole in it which was pretty good for a small German town. The open house wine was very reasonable and light enough to go well with the meal. Service was mostly done by the son of the family and very friendly and efficient. The owner/chef came out personally to make sure we were happy with the meal. The restaurant is located in a typical old building with walls 4 feet thick, so the temperature was pleasant inside even on a hot day. There is limited outside seating as well. Recommended without reservation."

Found this place while walking by on a cruise walking tour. Great pasta, neat room, friendly staff with reasonable prices. This checks all of the boxes. You need to try it!

Being on my own on a business I went there twice. Nice food and friendly staff. Although I had not booked in advance, they found a table for me. On both occasions they offered a Grappa

Located in the heart of Old Town and just a stone's throw from Rathaus (where you could ride the shuttle bus to the iconic Oberhaus castle), one can enjoy having a palatable Italian dish.I would highly recommend it, especially for those who are going to stay there for a half day.

We had lunch at Il Monastero, small Italian restaurant on a side street in downtown Passau and it was really good. The pizza was large and tasty. It came with a salad and was large enough for my wife and I to share. Price for pizza, salad, and soft drinks came to 13 Euros. We will eat there again next time in Passau. It is an old monastery and the waitress was dressed like a monk. Cute!

A brick-oven baked pizza is good for the body and soul and Il Monastero delivered one, via a habit-clad waitress, that was as delicious as any we've had in Italy. While many places have stand-out food, Monastero stood out for the kindness of its staff. When we entered, we missed the entry to the dining room, blundered past kitchen and bathrooms and stopped just short of their private quarters. They shepherded us gently to the dining room and put us at ease so we felt like guests rather than idiots. That's a rare gift. Mille grazie!

My wife and I were on a group bike trip that went through Passau Germany. We were longing for some pizza and salad to change up from all the German food we had been eating, so we stopped for lunch at Ristorante Il Monastero. The staff mostly came from Italy to open this restaurant. We ordered the Caeser Salad and the Quattro Fromagio pizza. The salad was very good with nice crisp lettuce however the pizza stole the show. Now I am a pizza guy but I usually like mine with meat on it but this 4 cheese pizza was amazing with so much flavor. it had been cooked in their brick oven!We brought the rest of our bike group back their for dinner that same night. The housmade raviola was delicious as was...

"It was shortly before 10 pm and two other restaurants that had advertised having a kitchen open until 10 pm had already told me that the kitchen was, in fact, already closed. Roses was open and the waitress still let me order.I had the Cheesesteak 2 (steak, provolone, bell pepper, onion, mushroom), which came with a small salad dressed in oil and balsamic vinegar and steak fries. It was really a quality meal. The cheesesteak was one of the best I have ever had, and is definitely the best I have had in Germany. I could have eaten two. The fries were hot and fresh and cooked to perfection. The salad was OK, too - my only complaint there was that there were carrot and cucumber ribbons, which looked pretty but were hard to eat.If I remember correctly, the difference between Cheesesteak 1 and Cheesesteak 2 was sliced mushrooms, but the price difference was a euro. A euro seems a bit steep for a couple of pieces of mushroom, so if I return, I'd probably get the Cheesesteak 1 and save the euro. The other food on the menu sounded good, too.The waitress was very friendly and did an excellent job of managing the tables - at 10:30 p.m. on a Monday in winter, almost all of the tables were full and there was only one waitress working.Otherwise, the atmosphere was cozy - a shabby chic French café sort of place. Indie music was playing, and a little bit on the loud side, so if you're on a quiet date or looking for a place to meet up with friends and have a more serious conversation, this probably isn't it.Also, the beers are Hacklberger, but that's not printed on the menu - around here, there's always the risk of getting Graf Arco."
