"This no frills trattoria is like an uncut diamond; rough around the edges and easily overlooked. The hidden treasure is great fresh seafood cooked to perfection. In spring summer the seafood is on display outside for passersby to inspect and choose. The barbecues were already smoking when we walked passed at 7pm. At first we were at little intimidated by the burly men around the cooking fire eager for us to choose a fish and sit down at a table in a dead end ally. There were only a few plastic tables and everyone was Sicilian, no tourists. It looked like a scene from The Godfather . However we were drawn by the promise of undoctored fresh seafood, cooked simply and the prices were very reasonable. We returned later in the evening choose the day 's menu, a mixed seafood grill with dorade (sea brim) calamari, squid, prawns and swordfish covered in breadcrumbs Sicilian style to preserve the moisture. All this served with olives, mixed salad, 2 carafes of table wine (not great) and strong espresso followed by a glass of lemoncello for €20. Fell in love with the ambiance despite the plastic cups and realised halfway through our meal that Trattoria da Salvo was in reality Padre Aldo 's restaurant, which is written up in the NY Times, and the burly men were his sons. When I had spoken to our host at the B B she had no idea who Padre Aldo was but she did recommend this restaurant as typically Sicilian. It is interesting to note that the price of the days menu hasn 't changed in 2 years despite Padre Aldo 's notoriety and his regular Sicilian clients."
