"We were recommended this restaurant and it has taken us some time to finally get here. The building is historic and well maintained, bare floor boards add to the character but do little to dampen the background noise from a full restaurant. The food is traditionally English, in season and well cooked and presented. You have a choice between a 2/3 fixed price menu (3 choices for each course) and an A la Carte I had tomato and onion soup, a great dish, along with Sea Bass, with prawns, hasselback potatoes, whilst my partner had haddock with a dill and cream sauce, followed by rice pudding with maple apples (brilliant). So why 4 rather than 5 stars, the service, was friendly but the one server was rushed, covering the whole restaurant (it appeared which had a number of different rooms). A couple of time things were promised , water, which never appeared, a wine list arriving 15 or so minutes later long pauses between courses, with empty plates. We felt sorry for the waitress. I first read about The Old Fire Engine House in advance of a weekend coach tour of East Anglia in May 2014, staying in Ely Travelodge.

After sales service is not normally a concept associated with restaurants. However, in my case, I would like to focus upon the excellent way they helped me. Foolishly I left my mobile phone in the restaurant at around 10.15pm. By 10.30 pm, they had taken the care and initiative, to ring my landlines to say We have found your phone. You can collect tomorrow from the office . I arrived at 8.30am the following morning, was greeted most helpfully, and my phone was returned. Splendid service indeed. They do care. "We went out as a family for lunch. It was not overly busy in there and we had pre booked. We had to wait over 15 minutes for our drink order to be taken. We then asked for them to take our food order to try and speed things up. There only seemed to be 2 front of house staff working and service was very slow. The menu was quite limited, and 2 of the main dishes were not available. We ordered two steaks, and chicken and chips. We asked what one of the dishes were (bravas fries) and the waiter didn’t know so he asked the other man, and the description given was “it’s just the fries with tomato in a tapas dish” what came was potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce covering the potatoes. We waited over an hour and 10 minutes for our food to arrive. I appreciate that the food is cooked fresh, but service was very slow. The people on the table next to us also commented twice to staff about how long things were taking. When we finally got our food, it came out in dibs and drabs, one dish had been forgotten about and we had to remind the waiter for this. We were not given steak knives so we had to ask for them. We were also not asked if we wanted any condiments like salt and pepper. The food was served to us at our table with the waiter passing the plates to us. Yet when we finished the other man asked us to stack all of our plates up for him! We eat out quite often, I know that there are restrictions in place due to Covid but as yet I have never been asked to help clear the table. Overall an experience I do not wish to repeat."
