"I've long wanted to dine at Landhaus Scherrer and finally got to do so on my recent June trip to Hamburg. I had the Classic menu for 125 Euros which was excellent in every respect. Amuses were pickled vegetables and two little soups - one asparagus, the other I think was kohlrabi. The starter course was a really good lobster salad with green and white asparagus and various herbs, cherry tomatoes, melon, and greens. The second course was Hamburger Fischsuppe, which had all kinds of clams and fish -- very tasty and very fresh. Then came turbot, served with an apple horseradish foam sauce and julienned vegetables. This was a relatively simple preparation, but was a wonderful dish. Following this was the crispy duck that the restaurant is known for. I was not disappointed, it was just what I was looking forward to. Accompanied with braised smoky cabbage and dollops of sweet potato, this was a dish based on local tradition but prepared with great finesse (and it was presented at the table by Chef Wehmann). The dessert course of quark, blueberry compote, and ice cream was good, but somewhat too sweet for me, I had several glasses of wine, from a nice selection, offered at a very fair price by the glass (including a Kühn Riesling and a Kaiserstühl Spätburgnder) . The atmosphere of the Landhaus is elegant and quite traditional but then one notices a unique edginess provided by the large erotic painting and the Aphrodite plates on the table! This restaurant has had a Michelin star for about 30 years and it continues to be a great dining experience. Here is a rare place where one can savor cuisine that has German roots but is very individualistic and prepares everything with the highest quality ingredients. Those not familiar with Hamburg might be reluctant to travel beyond the immediate city center for an evening meal. But this is really not a problem: I reached Landhaus Scherrer with the 36 bus that leaves every 10 minutes from the Jungfernstieg, and on return the taxi fare back to the center was less than 20 Euros."
