"After four years in Frankfurt, we are coming to the end of our German adventure. As luck would have it, we have finally found a really first class restaurant: Gustav. It is one star Michelin standard which is about right. Atmosphere in restaurant is lively on a Tuesday night, but not too loud and decor is attractive. Service is attentive but not overly so. Food is excellent. Amuse Bouches of potato and apple dumpling and mushroom broth were both tasty, as was the sourdough bread. None of these were wow. Starters of smoked potato and catfish liver and of winter salad were both very good (my wife's potato marginally more tasty). Interim courses of grilled dairy cow with Brussels sprouts and char cooked in hay were another step up (again my wife had the slightly better choice of the beef). Mains were salsify and duck. My duck (breast and leg) with radish, fermented prunes and licorice was superb. Desserts were a slight step down; I had the hand Kase and my wife had the beetroot and smoked Apple (yes). With a decent bottle of fruhburgunder, a glass of champagne, gin and tonic and two extra glasses of red and coffees the cost of €260 was fair enough for food of this quality. Any negatives? The first courses were ever so slightly over seasoned with salt but the biggest downer for us is the very limited menu which means we probably won't be going back before we leave."
