"During our visit to Shipston for a week, my husband, daughter, and I made this restaurant our second home. The building was charming and traditional, with a cozy bar perfect for dogs, kids, and lively conversations over a great selection of ales and lagers. We especially enjoyed the corner sofa for playing cards, and can imagine how lovely it must be with the fire lit in winter. However, the highlight for us was the beautiful garden with a natural wigwam tree and children's play area, offering a scenic view of the rolling hills. While they do not typically serve food, we were delighted by the wood-fired pizza oven that visits once a month, as well as the occasional local fish and chips night. We also had the chance to experience "sharing night," where locals bring in cheese and homemade bread to enjoy at the bar. With fantastic staff, a picturesque garden, and a cozy atmosphere, this pub left a lasting impression on us and we look forward to returning in the future."

Staying in the area, this pub was recommended by the cottage owners so we nipped in. Lovely, tender steaks, a warm welcome, friendly locals and quick service. We have rebooked for Thursday.

Myself and my wife with our dog's stayed hear for two nights. The landlord and lady were very friendly and welcoming. The pub itself was very traditional and the locals very friendly. We ate there both nights and the food was excellent. The accommodation was comphtetble. They also have a large garden for the dogs to run around in. Will definitely go back.

Stayed here while on business in the area and was delighted to be shown to a well maintained room and a very comfortable bed. Ate in the restaurant both nights. Excellent fish and chips one night and a very tasty homemade burger the other. Service was excellent and what a delight to find the owners very friendly and who took the time to make me feel welcome. Will definitely stay here again if in the area

Booked in advance and were hopeful when we saw the car park was full. Goodness knows where they all were as the pub was empty.. The menu was so limited we struggled to find something we all wanted. When the food arrived the veg was in cold serving dishes and was undercooked and bland. There was nothing special at all. When it came to dessert the choice was underwhelming to say the least and was we did have was not worth the wait. Overall i would say overpriced as well. In hindsight i wish we had gone a mile up the road where we had eaten before and knew the standard was excellent.

We were staying in a cottage in the Village of Lower Brailes and decided we could not be bothered to cook on Tuesday evening so as per recommendation s in the folder we rang through our order. We were given a time when they would be ready and two of the party walked down 3, minutes to the pub. The food wash ready on time even though they were very busy in both bars with people eating in. The fish and chips were well wrapped and still pipping hot when we got back they were delicious. Would recommend going there to eat as it looked a really interesting and cosy place. With a good menu to choose from.

We were told that the fish and chips at this restaurant were legendary. We had a drink in the gardens before going inside for our meal of haddock chips and peas. The fish was beautifully cooked but the chips were not very good, looking like frozen chips. If the chips had been better the meal would have been excellent. The restaurant looked a little tired and the corridors which lead to the gardens were untidy. I understand that the pub has recently changed hands so maybe this will be sorted soon. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and it appears to be popular with the locals. Sort the chips out and we will visit again.

We returned on Tuesday for delicious fish and chips, made with fresh fish delivered from Grimsby, in the lovely garden at the back of the pub. We were lucky to be there during the first week of the month, as every first Wednesday a wood-fired pizza van sets up in the backyard and draws a crowd of locals who come to eat or take home pizza. The pizzas were fantastic and the atmosphere was lively as people sipped drinks and chatted while waiting for their orders. We missed out on the 'hot chicks' BBQ chicken special on Thursday due to a prior commitment, but we would have loved to try it! In addition to the nightly specials, there is a full menu available and everyone seemed to be enjoying th...

Just popped in on the off chance for a lunchtime pint of Hook Norton as on holiday in the area for a few days. Met Ian the landlord who was very friendly and welcoming. The front bar was full of diners tucking in to amazing portions of fish and chips. Found out that there had just been a delivery that day of freshly caught fish from Grimsby and this is one of the specialities at the Gate. Decided to go back for supper and enjoyed fantastic fish and chips also tempting were the mussels and the home made pasta arrabiata. With such a warm atmosphere created by the regulars at the bar, the excellent service, good value, and the great choice of beers and ales we had to go back the next evening fo...

The Boxing Hare

The Boxing Hare

"I’m frustrated and annoyed with booking a romantic meal for our year wedding anniversary, with the current pandemic and work commitments it made a change to make an effort and be excited to visit the boxing hare as the reviews had been excellent. We...were seated in the garden room, next to a family who were on first name terms with the waiting staff and who were so loud I thought I was at a Chelsea match! We received complimentary glasses of champagne and we placed our order for starters and main which were excellent however I felt rushed with the service, as much as I tried to have a conversation all I could hear was this family at decibels to which enough was enough usually I would say something, however rather than ruin there evening I asked for us to be reseated to which the waiting staff were in agreement that they were loud! So why place us next to them? We were given a table in a different part of the pub still busy with other diners giving respect to one another. The table given I was advised I had as it was reserved? I placed dessert order and two lattes with baileys followed by the bill! The bill was a tad on the steep side for a gastro pub perhaps the prices are based on the price of fuel to fill the owners Bentley Overall felt it was a rushed evening disappointed with the seating arrangements,I won’t be returning as I felt what was important to us wasn’t important to the Boxing Hare I’ve had better evenings at The Falkland Arms Great Tew, The Great Western Aynho"
