"We were staying with an old friend for the Easter weekend at her nearby holiday house and so suggested that we might take her our for a really nice lunch on Easter Sunday. About two weeks prior to our visit she had had phoned the Cally Palace Hotel and booked a table for 3 in the restaurant at 1.00pm. The member of staff taking the call had not made any other comment than to confirm the date and time. As we arrived at this magnificent building on a sunny day, our expectations rose. Even the lukewarm welcome from the girl on Reception did not dampen our hopes. Imagine our surprise and utter disappointment when we were told at the bar that there were only a small range of sandwiches available, This hotel does not deserve any success if potential guests are treated in such an offhanmd manner."

A very pleasant stay. The staff are exceptional and the food is first class. The area has lots of history and good beaches nearby. The hotel has very good facilities and lots of interesting features. Easy to access, just off the A75

I took my Dad for Afternoon Tea at The Cally for Father's Day and it was lovely we couldn't fault it. Sandwiches, cakes, wraps, tea all fantastic and the staff could not do enough for us. All in all, it was a lovely day and I would definitely return. Voir le carte

Great stay at this hotel, full of old world charm. Staff couldn't do enough to help. The ground were well kept with plenty of walks. The pool was a good size. The food both at breakfast and dinner was innovative and delicious. Would definitely stay again if in the area

Had a lovely meal at the Cally Palace Hotel this week. The ambiance was great with very helpful attentive staff. The food very tasty, and the pre and post dinner drinks in the lounge just added to the whole experience. If I had a criticism to make it would be the pianist. He was a master of the piano but I just found the tempo rather quick. Just a little slower would have been more relaxing.

Had intended to go to the hotel for afternoon tea. Arrived and were told couldn't get it because we had not pre booked. Very disappointed. There were only 3 of us, not exactly a bus load. Had lunch in the conservatory. It was ok. Ordinary bread had been flattened when sandwiches cut and drinks were given way before the food so we needed more. All in all it was ok but nothing special. Having seen others having the afternoon tea, it looked great. Voir le carte

We visited as part of a family birthday celebration in August. We have been a couple of times before when visiting the area for drinks. We had afternoon tea booked which was set out ready for our arrival. Plenty of space for us all and friendly staff. The afternoon tea itself was delicious with plenty of choice to choose from. We all took leftovers home which was great too. Great surroundings, wonderful food and friendly staff make the hotel a lovely place to visit for a special occasion.

Cally Palace is a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. The room was comfortable and clean although some of the features are a little dated and shabby. You get a good breakfast with plenty of choice and the evening meal was excellent though a little pricey unless you go for the dinner B B option. The waiting staff are brilliant but the reception staff need to up their game. Unfriendly unsmiling unhelpful for this I have knocked a star off. They could hardly be bothered to give us directions to our room, we found it ourselves. I was stood at the desk for ages before I was even acknowledged. It was the same at checkout, no manners at all.

"Visiting Port Patrick again today we thought we would try a new place to eat. We normally eat at the same place here but today with chose the Crown Hotel. When you walk into the crown you see how old it is and I must admit it looks quant but a little dated. After finding a seat and deciding what to eat I went to the bar to order food and drinks. The service from the member of staff were pleasant and welcoming. We ordered 2 cokes and 2 stake and ale in a pudding one with chips and one with baby potatoes. We were charged a few pence short of £39 and given 2 cans of coke and asked would we like a glass with them? £4.80 for 2 cans of coke) Going back to the table I sat down and within less than 5 minutes our food was there on our table. I always worry when the food is so quick as I never feel it properly prepared fresh for you and when you are paying £17 a meal you at least want something fresh-ish. WHAT REALLY ANNOYED ME was while we were eating our food people were bringing dogs into the bar past our table to talk to a guy sat next to us. Chatting away these dogs were just sat by our feet as we ate. No one seemed to care about these dogs brushing up against people eating a meal. The food The baby potatoes were ok, the pudding was a frozen one you would get from a supermarket, the veg was hard, the meat was dry and bland and the gravy tasteless. I would say this food was a preprepared meal and just placed into a microwave. I don’t like to be so blunt in my reviews as this is always someone’s business and livelihood was are talking about, but this really was that bad. The service during the meal was none existent. When the waitress came to take our plates she did not seem surprised when I complained about our food, saying only I’ll pass it on. No apologies or anything. Even with me saying the food was especially the veg was disgusting. It was like water off a ducks back. Will I eat here again NO sadly the service and the food was very poor."

"Myself and my partner where just outside of portpatrick yesterday and wondered about somewhere to have lunch, it was about 12.30pm on a scorching hot Bank holiday Sunday. We hadn’t actually planned to go there to start with but thought why not. I saw on Facebook Connors Restaurant had just uploaded a Facebook post about stopping there for a choice of 2 lovely menus and a cheeky gin, sounded perfect! The post had went up about 15 mins before we arrived, so I assumed they must be looking to take some tables. I walked down and there where 2 tables taken outside, and 1 table inside. I asked if I could get a table for 2 outside if possible and I was told no they had been reserved and I thought okay but before I could even open my mouth again she said all tables inside where also reserved that they where fully booked. There was 1 table inside, other wise it was pretty empty. Ok no problem, we found somewhere else so no big deal, after about 2 hours spent having food and wondering around we went back to the car (parked just up from Connors restaurant) and I noticed again there was only the 1 table outside, and no one at the others. I’m maybe wrong but I felt like this was odd, the inside didn’t look like it was “fully booked” either. It actually looked a little dead compared to everywhere else. This has also happened to my friends a couple of times too they’ve went in and the place has been stone dead but got turned away because of the excuse of being fully booked. Just felt like it was not quite right. Sorry I never usually write reviews but felt like I had to get my point across on this one. We would love to dine here and hopefully will in the future."

"Mount Stewart Hotel Portpatrick First of all can I just say that this review is for both the Hotel and restaurant, not just the restaurant which is what tripadviser is asking about, My wife and I checked in on 18/7/22 for two nights dinner bed and breakfast, our initial impression was that the hotel was at the top of a steep road up from Portpatrick Main Street. With only a few parking places at the front, however there is resident parking at the back of the hotel but you then have to carry your bags down a hill at the side of the hotel to enter at the front not a problem but if elderly or infirm could be difficult. It would be sensible to unload at the front and then park at the back of the hotel, if there is no parking at the front, however when you first arrive you don’t know that there is no entrance at the back or anything about the hotel, so first tip would be dump your bags then park the car. On entering the Hotel we were greeted by a welcoming pleasant nice reception person young lady who quickly processed our admission and explained the layout and arrangements for meals etc, good start. We were located in the Wallace room which on the web site is listed as almost a suite, no exaggeration we loved it, a large room with double bed, good sized wardrobe a courtesy mini bar tea and coffee making facilities with a kettle and kenco coffee machine, a large tv never on a large en-suite shower room. In the en-suite there is dormer window this opens and has a pull down blackout blind built into it for privacy from the houses behind it takes a wee bit of fiddling to sort it .Best bit in the room was the window seat with a fantastic view over Portpatrick and the Irish Sea, I cannot express the pleasure we had watching boats coming and going from Portpatrick harbour simple pleasures And the window fully opened to allow air into the room, during the hottest two days of 2022 this was important and needs to be mentioned. On night one we headed down for dinner looking forward to a bit of fine dining and were directed into of all places the breakfast room to be seated at our table I think this is used for residents dining but I feel the room is a bit lacking in atmosphere We asked for a change of table to the bar area with a window table, this was sorted everything was great. Based on our two dinners in the hotel I would have to give the kitchen the thumbs up, the food was good and the service was chatty and friendly all good. Breakfast was well cooked with plenty of choice for cooked options there was cereal and fruit juice to help yourself to but no fresh fruit or yoghurt I found this unusual in a four star hotel. The only niggles I have are to do with the room we were in, there is a large burn in the carpet where someone I think has put the hairdryer down , the window in the main room is difficult to operate because of a rusted locking plate making the mechanism catch, the shower room door has no lock and no door catch so does not stay closed, we had to use a paper wedge to keep the door closed for a modicum of privacy, also an idiot sheet to explain the working of the dormer window would be helpful as most people wil never have had to operate one of these things. On our last morning my wife had a long lie then tried to take a shower only to find that there was no water, I went downstairs to find that there were only some breakfast staff in the hotel, they were very helpful and checked to see if there was any empty rooms, unfortunately there were none, the lady I was talking to explained that the water system in the hotel meant if others were using their shower there wouldn’t be enough pressure to get water to the top floor namely ours, so my wife used bottled water to clean her teeth and then we waited to see if the water pressure built up enough for her to take a shower this was a real adventure, eventually a trickle started then a real shower was had and equilibrium was restored, I found out later that a plumber was in and I take it had fixed whatever the problem had been. Please do not see these things as anything major, we really loved our stay at this"

"My wife found this when looking for a place for us to spend our wedding anniversary. It sounded good on paper. It was a long and tedious drive for us though and I wasn’t sure it was worth it. I was totally wrong! This place is superb and well worth any drive! The setting is great-it has its own beach and there is a small patio where you can sit and there is a heater there too if you need it. There’s a nice lawn in front of the hotel too where those with dogs took them for a walk. The rooms are all different and all well appointed with their own en suite. The costs of the rooms reflects the size of the room and not the facilities. If you are tall like me (6ft 2) I wouldn’t go for one of the rooms in the roof as the coomb ceiling is a pain. However the thing you go there for is the food and that is sublime! It is a set menu in the evening which reduces waste and helps control costs. You get 7 courses, all quite small , but at the end of the meal you are adequately fed but not full. We were there for 3 nights and had a different meal every night. All the dishes were superb but we had mushroom soup one night and it was the best soup I have ever tasted! In fact it was one of the best foods I have ever tasted! The breakfast is very good indeed and you can order whatever you like from the menu which is very comprehensive. I found that set me up for the whole day and I didn’t need a lunch. I must also mention the wine. The wine list is very comprehensive with some difficult to come by wines in it too like Chateau Musar. On 2 nights we went with the wine pairing list which I thought was very good value, especially the cheaper of the 2 lists we had every night. The hotel is a good centre for seeing things in the local area and , despite going in November we found things to occupy ourselves for the 3 days we were there. They have various themed weekends too which sound brilliant. But the hotel is so good it is worth going to anytime. We will certainly be back."
