"Fowey Hall is a wonderfully charming and impressive hotel with views of the River Fowey and the opposing, beautiful, hillside village of Polruan. There's no question, once you enter the building, you're surrounded by grandeur; with log fires and furnishings covering all manner of styles,...effortlessly blended to be interesting, yet remain comfortable. On this particular visit, we chose to eat in one of the temporary igloos that sit on the side of the building, with river and Polruan views. The igloos themselves, a popular addition these days are great in theory, but do offer some cumbersome problems to navigate, for both staff and guests alike. Truth is, it's a novelty that risks wearing off over time...but on a good day, offers unparalleled views and a good amount of privacy. Though the lack of music and, in this case, warmth, detracts a little from the experience. In a nutshell, the restaurant itself is a mixed bag of good food and clumsy service but with a price tag that forces a double take at the bill. Finding a good team to run a restaurant is hard... I know, I've run a fair few... but on this particular visit, to say the staff were green would be an understatement. Arriving at 8pm sharp (for our 8pm booking), we were left to wait whilst the previous diners finished up... This in itself is not a problem, it happens all the time... But as we were asked to sit in the grandeur of the lounge to wait, we would have expected to be offered a drink and although we had a drinks menu on the table, we didn't see any staff at all until our table was ready. It wasn't until 9:15pm, that we received our first... anything... Immediately it was clear that service would be tricky. Not least because of the zipped-up door ways to the igloos...but also, because the staff were so inexperienced. Asking for the Casablanca Valley Chardonnay returned a response, is that the pinot grigio . And then the bottle, once received 10 minutes later, bore none of the descriptive words from the menu except Chardonnay I'm not convinced that we got what we ordered. In these situations, you would think we'd have just told them there and then, but we did not have that luxury. The bottle, in a cooler, was placed on the table and off they went. We were left alone to check the bottle and to pour our own wine...and I've no problem with that, honestly... But it leaves no room for correction. What if, instead of a £30 bottle, were given a £200 bottle? Or vice versa... What if it was corked? Anyway, after some pointing at a menu (which only had 4 options), making sure our order was accurate, there was then a longer-than-expected wait for the food to arrive... (Adding another sign of greenness having the artichoke and nut velouté introduced as the soup which I almost sent back thinking it wasn't what I ordered)... I don't want to sound too harsh, the staff were very young and I'm ok with a little haphazardness... It adds a sense of mischievous mystery to the evening! But still... I think the presence of a more experienced manager supervisor might have been worth while. The food, however, was good. The artichoke soup with sourdough marmite butter was rich...very VERY rich... and the Seabass with chargrilled baby gem lettuce and dauphinoise potato was well balanced and cooked well, as were the side of heritage carrots. Could it have been refined? Absolutely. As mentioned, the velouté was far too rich and the butter to bread ratio was comical. 95% of the quenelle of butter was wasted... a tablespoon of butter on a thumb sized piece of bread?... And one finger sized piece of broccoli with the Seabass was a bit stingy... But ultimately, being critical about it is solely because of the price. Had it have been 20-30% cheaper, I couldn't have faulted it. But this is always the ultimate question: at £113 for 2x 2 courses, 2 sides and a bottle of the cheapest wine on offer, did we get value for money? The answer is probably, no. Just above average food, well below average service."
