"I 'd spent the first half of the day visiting sites in the Cannareggio district, not far from the San Giovanni e Paolo Civil Hospital and realized I was famished. When I come to Venice, I don 't plan anything I have what I call Leave It to Beaver days I meander, get lost, grab a cichetti and bicchi di vino...eat, drink, repeat in between seeing some of the most incredible history, art and culture Italy and Venice have gifted to the world. I stopped by a place, and saw a guy standing outside. I was actually looking for a special kind of cheese...at the end of the day, he had no idea where it was, and all I knew was that I was hungry. He sat me down at a table and am I thankful for that! I had a great view to people watch and it seemed there was a good mix of locals and visitors. The atmosphere was friendly, welcoming and low key. I love Cannareggio exactly for that reason! I try to stay on the low down when traveling and do my best to speak my moderately adequate Italian instead of English. Showing people in another country you are making an effort to understand and learn their 'world ' is very satisfying. Elis was the 'cheese guy that invited me in ' and was also my waiter. He was so friendly, his service was first class and the timing of all my food was perfect. No rushing here, but no extended waiting for the main dish. I didn 't even have to bang the silverware on the table to get attention. (LOL) I think if you 're like that in Venice, they secretly put a black mark by your name for the next time you visit, to warn everyone you 're coming and hang the closed sign up. I started with a nice glass of Cabernet yes, Venice does lovely Cabernets. The Acqua naturale served was a fine glass bottle of cold water, very refreshing, not the typical plastic bottle. A small, but noticeable feature. I ordered the Caprese Salad with Mozzarella Bufala. Divine. My main course was a very simple tagliatelle with cherry tomatoes and Pecorino Romano. I have to say it was an absolute burst of flavors and aromas. I rank it as one of the best pasta dishes I 've had here in the Venice area. I had planned to get a pizza, but they are HUGE! I 'd suggest splitting one and trying something else you 've never had. And the Bartender treated me to a shot of Limoncello. Whoa, Nelly! It was wonderful. I should have asked if it was homemade. Next time. To Elis, and everyone there, Mille Grazie per tutti!!! If you go, tell them Telemark Jane sent you. They 'll have no idea what you 're talking about, and may turn the sign around to say 'CHIUSO '. LOL"
