"Now, it may be that I have been spoiled by the transcendent pizzas of Tosolini's in Piacenza, and I am not a pizza chef, but I can readily distinguish between proscuitto (which is available in most parts of Europe) and mortadella, or some form of processed meat.My partner and I were hungry on our first night in Berlin (running a workshop here) and we ordered a couple of drinks and a simple, reliable favourite, a pizza with a tomato and mozzarella base and with proscuitto on it. I should note that our waiter was charming and spoke excellent English. He was clear which pizza I ordered, and I confirmed the verbal order by pointing at the appropriate place in the menu.When it arrived, the base was thin (no problem there), but in my view underdone (no browning on the outer crust anywhere), and the merest suggestion of a tomato base with mozzarella. But the startling aspect was the eight or ten slices of a substance that, clearly, had been processed, and which had the characteristic circular fat globules that this kind of meat shows when sliced paper thin.We were both hungry, and do not believe in either wasting food or sending it back if it's edible. I mentioned this (that the meat was not proscuitto) to the waiter when paying for it, but he chose not to engage. On reflection, I can partially see his reason (the customer ate it) but he did check the order, and confirmed that proscuitto had been nominated."
