"We like tea and cake. No doubt about it. We've taken Afternoon Tea in all sorts of places. The most prestigious hotel in London yes. One of the most popular English stately homes yes. A brasserie in a provincial English city yes....But the best Afternoon Tea of all? You have to go to Wigan for that! Admittedly the posh end of Wigan Mrs Lyon's Tea Room in Standish. It's delightfully homely, with a choice of teas; a choice of freshly made sandwiches; scones still warm from the oven, and a choice of cake ranging from the traditional Victoria sponge to interesting concoctions involving Ferrero Rocher. Superb. Three of us met for tea at Mrs Lyon's everything was perfectly chintz. In a good way. If I was entertaining visitors from abroad, Mrs Lyon's is the kind of place I'd take them to, to prove that whatever the country is going through there are still little pockets of sanity! The service was excellent: attentive but not intrusive. Extra clotted cream to go with the scones? Certainly! At the end of our visit when I paid at the counter, I congratulated the two young women who had served us: it was an excellent tea. Hearing the praise, another lady popped her head through the serving hatch from the kitchen (Was this The Real Mrs Lyon She beamed! As did a young lad who was assisting her. If this was a family operation, it was even more praiseworthy. Of all the places in England I've had Afternoon Tea, this is the one that I will return to. Long may they continue!"

"As a child, my family used to travel up and down the length of England using North Western Coaches, stopping at various cities and cafeterias en route. I have the fondest memories of good cafes, good food, good service, and a sense of fulfilment, having visited the usual venues. Manchester Road Cafe is a very smart, clean, and healthy reminder of that kind of nostalgia, and when you go inside, there are plenty of tables and chairs that are comfortable, well laid out, clean and welcoming. When you look at the menu you are given a good selection of choices starting with two types of full English breakfast with either one or two items of each of the main ingredients, together with a range of meal variations/combinations, together with other meals normally associated with later in the day, all at excellent prices. There is a good number of staff members, both in the kitchen and serving/waiting on, which ensures quick, efficient, and very professional service, which minimizes the wait to receive the good quality produce. Everything is freshly made, there are good size portions, and there is flexibility, particularly in the breakfast at the time l was there. If you don't like a particular item, you can swap it for an extra one of the others that you have on your plate. For example, I don't like black puddings, so I had an extra fried egg in its place at no extra charge. Well done, Manchester Road Cafe. I also like a good mug of tea, and that's certainly what you get with your meal, together with 2 rounds of white or brown bread, toasted. There were beans, tomatoes, eggs, bacon, and sausages, which were gorgeous to enhance the eating experience. Full marks, great service, and seems to be doing exceptionally well growing in popularity. A distant family member of mine had a transport cafe for over 50 years, with his brothers and his father, and business is always good throughout the morning and the opening time here of 8 am and finishing time around 2 p.m is perfect both for the establishment and for the times that we are ready to eat. I'm sure you'll enjoy all that you have and have no hesitation in recommending it to you."
