"Having this on our doorstep used to be something we were really proud of but it 's evident this establishment is now only interested in diners and hotel residents. They have now enforced a tap room and rather bizarrely, table service for drinkers. The charm of the Red Lion was the bar area with the large sofa and chairs and 'library '. This area is reserved for diners only now. Don 't quite understand the logic for it other than they now no longer want drinkers only. We were frequent regulars, found the space a safe environment with a new born, somewhere lovely to host visiting friends and family, always a nice selection of drinks and helpful staff. Unfortunately, they have lost their way. Those visiting for just drinks don 't want to be shoved around the corner to be made to feel that they 're out of the way. The tap room is nice enough, a little cramped in areas and I know effort has been made to ensure it ties in with the bar area but quite frankly, shouldn 't it be the customers choice where they wish to sit? Why do those dining need two designated area 's to sit? Why do they need the restaurant AND the bar area? Take it back to how it was, let drinkers visit and purchase their drinks at the bar and sit where they please (obviously not in the actual restaurant) The investment in this place must have been huge in recent years, don 't let it go to waste by carrying on with these silly rules. Please also do not reply to this review with the same lack of acknowledgement of the issue you have on other posts. I 'm writing to you trying to help, not complain. As a regular who attended frequently and also dined occasionally, I won 't be returning until these issues are resolved. All the best,"

"I 'm really puzzled why Batemans does not feature higher in these ratings, OK, it 's not perhaps easy to find, but well worth the effort. My wife and I have eaten several times at Batemans, always at lunchtime, and have always been very happy with the standard here. Initially we used Groupon deals, what great value these represented, but now we are quite happy to pay normal prices, which are reasonable. This is does not fall into the trap of seeing and describing itself as a Gastro Pub the food is much better than that!! The menu is not massive, always a good thing in my eyes, but extensive enough to cater for most tastes. I have to confess that we struggle to order anything other than the steak pie which is spectacularly good. Proper tray baked pie with lovely shortcrust pastry and an ample filling of soft, tender meat. Accompanied by well cooked vegetables and excellent chips, this is the best steak pie to be had, and I count myself as something of an expert! The rest of the menu shows flair and imagination and has never disappointed when we have managed to get beyond the pie. Service is friendly and attentive, absolutely nothing to complain about in our experience. The ambience at Batemans is delightful if you like old world tradition and quality, most welcoming yesterday was a large roaring log fire, and tasteful Christmas decorations. Well done Batemans!"

"After many months of not going out a lot and following recommendations from our neighbours we decided to see if there was availability for a Saturday evening meal.Fortunately on telephoning we were told there was a table available. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and shown to a table. we were given a menu and drinks orders were taken. I had the nachos with dips for starters followed by a steak meal and Terry had prawn cocktail and scampi meal.We both found the food well cooked, well presented and very enjoyable. We found the staff to be very friendly, helpful and attentive.Following our excellent meal and paying we went through to the bar area where we relaxed and i had coffee and Terry had a further beer. There was a good selection of draught beers, wines and spirits and pleasing for Terry, cask ales.We had a most enjoyable evening and said we'd return. As we enjoyed our experience the night before so much we decided to ring and rather than cook at home decided to book for Sunday lunch. We are so glad we made this decision as once again we were warmly greeted by the staff and shown to a table. After ordering drinks we were that the normal menu was available as well as the Sunday carvery . We decided to stick with plan A and ordered the Sunday carvery. There were plate sizes. I had the medium plate and Terry went for the large. There was a choice of meats which all looked delicious and accompliments were added to the plate and there was an excellent choice of self service vegetables and gravy and sauces. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal and so glad we made the choice to dine there. We managed to find a space for a shared dessert of ice cream sundae which rounded off the meal perfectly.Following the meal we once again went through to the bar area for coffee and a drink. Many thanks to all the staff who made our visit enjoyable and we look forward to returning in the near future."
