"Staying nearby so decided to visit this pub for a late afternoon dinner. Children’s play area outside and little wooded area which the kids enjoyed. Easy to park, but couldn’t find the entrance, think the car park is at the back and has to go up some steps and through a gate to find the front door. Nobody welcomed us so I went and found some menus. We found a table outside and then went back in to order drinks and food. Food came quickly. I had sweet potato and butternut squash curry with chips and rice. Chips were ok, but didn’t taste fresh, nobody else liked them. Curry had a nice taste, but skin was left on the butternut squash, which ruined it. Bacon and Brie baguette was nice. Kids Mac n cheese was good. Scampi was poor quality. Kids meals came with ice cream. No other desserts offered for adults. Disappointing, won’t return."

"Fab meals plenty on your plate warm and comfortable tables chairs and armchairs. Dogs yippee are allowed. Most of the food is locally sourced and much like the hadh browns and rice pudding are home made. Delicious. Slices of cake including vegan are just £2.00 a slice. All in all a great place to go. The staff are friendly. You can mix and match various meals and you can see the open plan kitchen. Well worth a visit. Watch it though it does close at 3pm. Once a month an all you can eat buffet in the evening is enjoyed for a set price."

"I made a reservation online for lunch for three on Sunday, booking on Monday. The staff was friendly and the service was good. However, we were disappointed to be seated at a table in the loud bar instead of the dining room. It would have been helpful to receive a confirmation email, as I would have cancelled the booking if I knew we would be in the bar. When I mentioned our expectations to our waitress, she suggested making a telephone booking for the dining room instead. The lamb was tough, but the vegetables were well cooked. However, the food was all piled onto the plate instead of being served separately, which was a departure from my past experiences in the dining room. It did not look very appetizing. The lack of ambiance and the noise level made us feel gloomy, so we left as soon as we finished our meal."

"On a visit to this pub with family yesterday, we were shocked and appalled by the unsettling reception we received. There was a rowdy group of men and women (who were obviously under the influence of alcohol/narcotics) sitting at the table, nearest the door/bar. As we walked to the bar, the party began loudly and aggressively jeering us for no reason. As we waited to be served, these individuals continued jeering, staring and mimicking both me and my female companion. Staff appeared oblivious or chose to ignore what was happening right under their noses. We felt extremely intimidated and threatened by this thuggish behaviour. I quietly and discreetly suggested to my companion that we left. The two men of the group (who were obviously eavesdropping) began loudly mimicking my voice and comments. As I left, I informed the group that we were leaving owing to the discomfort that their behaviour had caused. Their response was a loud and F-bomb laden tirade of verbal abuse. Again, there was no intervention by staff to this yobbish. obnoxious and abusive behaviour, which could be heard even when we had exited the premises. I am just thankful that the rest of my family, including my children were not present at the bar to witness this disgraceful (and frankly confusing) incident that felt like playground bullying. I will not be returning and will spread the word that the Woodsman is not the place to visit if you’re looking for a family-orientated pub, where you feel safe and respected."

"We have been to this pub before to watch the Severn Bore and always had an excellent time! Nothing better than a breakfast while watching the bore from this pub!! So when my car started shaking on the A38 I knew if I could get it to The Severn Bore I would have a safe place to wait for recovery! I had no idea just how well they would look after us! The staff, management and customers were awesome! We were welcomed in and looked after as if we were family! My eight year old daughter had the best time on the bouncy castles (yes two bouncy castles) and play park in their garden. I was given the wifi password and offered use of their phone and they even fixed my car before the breakdown people arrived (the wheels bolts had come loose on my front tires). Nothing was too much trouble… I’m so grateful for how they looked after us! These have to be the nicest people running a pub anywhere on Earth! We will be back soon for roast and of course to watch the next bore!!"

"I’m not usually a fan of takeaway Indian as it’s always disappointing when you get it home but we were going to the Chinese next door last night when we smelled the Indian and went straight in. It was really nice, not greasy at all....Reasonable price for what we had for popadoms dips, onion bhajis, veg samosas, main chicken dishes, rice, chips a chicken tikka naan). Only a minute wait too which was good. The onion bhajis were lacking a bit of flavour but that’s my personal taste, I had the Goan chicken which was supposed to have mango slices in it, but it didn’t, just a dollop of mango chutney. It was still a really tasty dish, just not what it had said on the menu. Husband was happy with his dish. Really nice food, we’ll definitely go here again."

"We had a takeaway of Chilli Beef and Veg chow mein. Our usual Chinese takeaway was not available. So begrudgingly ordered from Magic Wok. Oh my! Absolutely delicious meal. Usually eating a takeaway we struggle to finish it because it looses the appeal through the meal. This particular selection was beyond any Chinese meal we had ever eaten. Fantastic! We ordered again a few days later and it didn't disappoint. The quality of the chilli beef was A1. You can actually taste the chilli! Outstanding work people, thank you very much!"

"Ordered 2 drinks, Dough balls, 2 different Pizzas. Order taken by male waiter, not written down kept the Order in his head! Drinks arrived correctly No Dough balls arrived! Pizza’s arrived, one completely wrong! Was told that the wrong Pizza would be replaced with the...correct ordered Pizza. I said that I want a new Pizza also because mine would be cold while waiting for the other Pizza to be cooked, I was not about to eat my Pizza on my own! male waiter agreed. I proceeded to ask the male and a female waiter if I would receive a newly cooked Pizza, answer was yes, I then asked the cook if he was cooking me new Pizza, his answer was no he would not cook me a new Pizza, I was expected to eat a Pizza that had been kept warm for about 10+ mins. I told both the male and female waiter that the cook was not going to cook me a new Pizza and said that I was going to leave I left, very very very poor, will not be going back again ever"

"I visited as a gastredner for the local rotary unit. the pitt itself was a pleasant room and staff attentive. the functional space is excellently rebuilt scheune. the gammon meal was very good, but I was disappointed that no fresh bread or tools with butter were offered. I found the red wine very tasty, but had nothing to blur it! as a friend of the owners, I recommend that beautiful rolls can be provided for larger groups. the pudding was okay. but if milk free cheesecake does not work!"

"We had a great experience at a charming English pub. We dined outside and had a delicious lunch. The prices were reasonable, coming in just under £50 for a family of four with drinks included. The restaurant is vegetarian-friendly and also welcomes dogs. The bartender was lovely. It was a perfect discovery during our walk."

"My daughter and I visited this pub a few months ago. We had heard that the food could be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. However on this occasion we had a lovely meal. We met the proprietor who seemed a very pleasant chap. Last Sunday we went for lunch 7 of us. Well. Unfortunately, on this particular day it was definitely a miss. The Turkey was very good, but unfortunately a couple ordered roast beef which was tough and hard to eat. 1 person did not eat her meal at all. Roast potatoes were hard and the roast parsnips done to a crisp. A very tiny sausage in a small piece of bacon and a tiny round ball of stuffing was what constituted the trimmings. My son in law ordered a latte, which was weak watery and undrinkable. My daughter and I ordered Irish coffee which was weak, watery, very sweet and the cream on top had been sprayed out of an aerosol can, it was horrible. When paying the bill I met the proprietor for the first time since the initial occasion when all had been so good. I mentioned how disappointed we were with the meal and what the problems were and I was met with complete indifference, no apology and certainly no refund. Hard to believe that this was the same person! Sometimes it's not what goes wrong it's how things are dealt with when they do go wrong. The waiting staff were lovely and helpful but on the basis of hit and miss, I need to go to a pub where the proprietor actually cares about his customers and is there to put things right if things go wrong? Shall never go back and I live locally."

"We stayed just down from the George and I’d booked a table for our silver wedding anniversary. Good choice of food, several fish dishes. I had the platter of seafood which was good but just too much of it for me. Neither of us wanted dessert but Pat presented us with a plate of strawberries and truffles with “happy 25th wedding anniversary “ written in chocolate. That was very thoughtful and a lovely gesture. Highly recommend."

"I'm sad to have to give this review, because this has always been an establishment that serves a reasonable mid priced carvery in a pleasant environment. We have even recommended it to customers looking for a meal. I'm not sure we would do that now unless our Sunday lunch genuinely was a blip and they up their game considerably. We booked a table for 1 p.m. arrived and placed our order, we had a small and hungry child with us so timing was important. After we had paid in advance we were informed that there was a wait time of at least 20 mins for our food, this actually became 40 mins plus 20 mins waiting to order, food arrived at 2.15 p.m. What we received was a plate of almost cold meat to which we would add vegetables from the self service station.. When we went to get veg half the containers were empty and we had to ask for them to be re-filled. Basically the service was appalling , the food was mediocre and the constant re-assurances from the young woman who seemed to be running things were falling on deaf ears, we didn't want to know that they were doing their best and their job was to keep customers happy. The only happy customers we saw were the take away bookings and the ones who it seems can walk in and be served a take away meal quickly to avoid congestion in the setting. We were also customers and we were most definitely kept happy. I would however like to thank the single waitress working that day for her kindness to a small child by rustling up a plate of cucumber and apple to keep her going during a very long and frustrating wait."

"We were visiting locally and staying in Cinderford and the Akash was recommended. There was no parking so we parked in the hairdressers next door which was closed. When we got to the front door we almost turned around a blown front window that probably hasn’t been cleaned for 10 years ,plastic flowers in the window that had an inch of dust I could go on and on . But we stuck with it. By the end of the starter we were pleasantly surprised and starting to have a different view. By the end of the meal we all agreed that it was probably the best Indian we’d ever had. And we’ve had a few. The fact that they don’t serve alcohol didn’t distract from that . This would’ve made a great dine in the dark."

"We went for lunch but were told they don't do lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays doesn't say this on their website) but that we could choose something from the sandwich menu. We opted for a roasted veg and pesto and a ham, tomato chutney and goats cheese sandwich option was sandwich or ciabatta but only sandwiches were available.Around 25 minutes later the food arrived we were the only customers and it was revolting! The ham was suspiciously warm and rather grey around the edges, the bit of salad was well past its best with slimy green bits in and everything was made with bits of dry toast! It was inedible and we did complain when asked if the food was alright. Was not expecting to have to pay for the food as we couldn't eat it, but were still charged 50%.The whole place seemed to be run by a young lad who was having to do everything, but I'm not sure he had the skills to be preparing food! He tried to be helpful but didn't know what to do when we said the food was not good. At least he made a good latte!"

"My partner I arrived promptly at 7:25 for a 7:30 reserved table. We were pointed in the general direction of table 4 which was at the end of the dining room. Having ordered drinks at the bar, I had to go to the bar and remind the staff some 15 minutes later. Eventually said drinks arrived. We placed our order and waited between 20 30 minutes for the starters top arrive and when they did, the waitress apologised for the wait. Having waited almost an hour for the mains to arrive, we were on the verge of settling the bill for what we 'd received and go home, when the waitress arrived with hot plates, ready for the mains. What annoyed us the most, was that 'takeaway ' meals appeared to go out on time but people who were seated after us, were served their entire order before us. Eventually, a 'manager ' appeared and apologised for a 'shortage of staff, saying that he had had to deliver the takeaway meals. He told us he was deducting 10% off our bill for our trouble. Although the service was abysmal to say the least, the food was excellent."

"this is the first time we tried breakfast here, it will certainly not be the last. from the moment we arrived at our time, we can't owe anything of our visit. the personal was friendly and welcome throughout. the breakfasts. we had from this world, absolute perfection. my other half, she had the full far away while I decided for the big far away, both were amazing absolutely intestinal buster, well presented, top class local ingredients that were obviously cooked by a professional cook. the last touch of perfection was the individually wrapped part of the real butter from the netherend farm in lydney, for the toast. the coffee was also excellent. we need to say that this was the best breakfast, at current real value for money. we look forward to our next visit for another really amazing experience."

"I visited here when I was in Newent last weekend with the little un. I needed to find a bank while I was there and came across this place so me and a friend popped in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. It's situated on the main high street and doubles as an Italian restaurant in the evening. The place is set out with those small tables suitable for a family of four with nice little table cloths. We didn't stop for long but had a cup of tea and some cake. The tea came out in one of those old pots that your grandmother used to have on her kitchen table. They had proper cups too. My cake was very well presented and tasted yummy. If we had had longer I might have stopped for some lunch but what I saw looked traditional, welcoming and irresistible. Will definitely visit again when I'm in the area. Just a pity I won't be visiting in the evening to try their Italian food as it's more than a stone's throw from where I live. In summary A little place of old England. Glad to see places like this are still around"

"Stayed here for two nights. It is easier to list the bad points only there weren't any. Exceptional find for the price and facilities. There is a bus stop right outside for buses to Gloucester, Ross on Wye and Hereford so I left my car in the car park. Behind the hotel is a copse with paths leading out into the Gloucestershire Way and ideal for a before or after lunch/dinner stroll. Just thought of one minor issue, the stairs up to the bedrooms (which face away from the road) are a bit steep but straight, well lit, hand railed and negotiable by most. Great stay!"

"9 of us stopped here while canoeing down the Wye. Lovely garden and pleasant surroundings. Shame about the girl serving us. Every question or request was responded to with disdain and rudeness. It actually became pretty funny, how someone can work in the service industry and behave like this is beyond me. In all seriousness, service is absolutely awful. She was unhelpful and sarcastic. The menu was out of date and when we tried to order she would literally sneer and tell you they didn't sell it. We have to guess apparently, maybe it's a game to keep customers entertained? Doesn't work. It took us 3 attempts to get a jug of water, we even offered to pour it ourselves. Eventually we filled our glasses from the bathroom. If the place was busy I could understand, but there were only us and 1 other table. Food isn't great, overpriced for what it is. My advice would be to bring a packed lunch!"
