"This was a return visit, much looked forward to, to celebrate a family special birthday. Booked several weeks in advance, specifically requesting a table in the bar dining room for 1pm, Sunday lunch and would order the roasts 2 days before. Knew something was wrong...when they rang asking us to confirm table was booked for 1.45 and they said we had booked duck. Said no that is not us, but it was clear from their confusion that they had not made a note of our booking, but said ‘no problem, we would have a table. I would add here that a deposit had been paid at the time of booking. So we arrived on time as booked, and instead of being seated where we had booked, our party of six were shoved into a tiny corner in the main very crowded bar clearly not a dining table more a wide plank of wood. None of the other tables in this bar were used for eating. The bar was crowded with drinkers standing up, (no social distancing whatsoever) and when we sat down were literally squashed together, our seated backs were being jostled and shoved by drinkers, our heads knocked and and drinks spilt onto us. The noise of shouting behind us was deafening. The table was not suitable at all to eat at it was only large enough for drink glasses. When the food arrived, the veg and meat dishes and wine bottle had to be placed on the windowsill. We had no veg until we asked if there should be some and the girl said she didn’t know but would check. When the veg arrived the meat was nearly cold. We asked for more gravy hoping to disguise the cold meat, but that never appeared. We asked to be moved to a proper table but were told that they were all taken, no doubt due to our original booking having been lost. The food was very poor two tiny joints of meat between six the pork was cold and the beef was cold and raw in the centre. They had clearly been sitting in the kitchen for a very long time. Those tiny ‘joints’ cost £150!, a total rip off disgrace from a quality butcher, they would not have cost more than £20 total. We had not been asked how we wanted the beef cooked. When the bill came, we found that the prices of the roasts were significantly more than menu on website and on checking were told that it costs money to change the website! The woman at the bar rudely grabbed the bill and said I’ll change it, and then slammed it down on the bar top. To make matters even worse, on arrival home, found that the deposit paid had not been taken off the bill, although this was rectified. We will never return to this place despite it always having been our favourite and cannot recommend it whatsoever."

"This was our second visit and as our first was a good one decided to take our parents for Mother’s Day Sunday lunch. On arrival the restaurant was busy unlike our first so was good to see it like that, this was probably the only good thing yesterday. Were greeted and seated and handed menus, whilst looking through we were quite surprised to see just 3 starters on offer, one being soup then a fish and a beef tartare, not great if I’m honest. After about 15 minutes our drink orders were taken, the wine was quite prompt but the draft drinks seemed to take an age to arrive. Food orders were taken and the starters arrived, the soup was ok but not very warm at all, the mackerel starters were just shocking, both members of our party that ordered this said how minute it was which we could all see and it was pretty tasteless and bland, also they found it very difficult to cut the meat away from the skin as it just turned to mush, there was a very very small amount of avocado purée underneath, definitely not worth the cost as after 4 mouthfuls was finished. We all ordered the Sunday roasts of beef, lamb and pork, as mentioned we had been for Sunday lunch before and couldn’t fault it, this time however we were left in shock and embarrassed as we had told our families how good it was. The pork resembled a chop which was over cooked and the lamb and beef were quite chewy and definitely didn’t have the flavour we expected. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire were most definitely cooked the day (if not two) before and just re warmed, yes we understand this is needed on a busy Mother’s Day but they were all solid and on a couple of occasions we had food flying as it was cut into. We were all most dissatisfied and disappointed Needless to say we didn’t stay for desert. Will most certainly not be returning and would not recommend."

"Visited with family recently intending to have lunch before visiting a National Trust property nearby. We made our choices but unfortunately 2 or 3 items were off the somewhat limited menu including, surprisingly, soup. We were served our drinks quickly but then the wait began. When I enquired as to the whereabouts of our food after half an hour, our waiter asked if we 'd like him to check with the kitchen. Yes, we would like, particularly as we had a hungry child in tow We were then told: 'About another 15 minutes ' as our food was currently being prepared. After about 10 minutes I was presented with a finger bowl of warm water and a piece of lemon (I was having the mussels) so quite naturally assumed something was about to be served. Afraid not stomach, don 't get excited. Another 10 minutes elapsed and so I asked a passing member of staff why I had been given this unaccompanied treat, although by now I was strongly resisting the urge to eat the lemon and down the contents of said finger bowl. This was then whisked away and exchanged for a warmer version. Exactly an hour after ordering, out came the food to a decidedly icy reception from our table of ravenous people. It had been a very long time since breakfast and we were fast running out of time to do the very thing we had journeyed to Petworth for visit Petworth House. Had someone had the decency to inform us there was going to be an exceedingly long wait to get served, we would have gone elsewhere which was presumably precisely why they didn 't. We had to eat our food quickly, skip desserts and coffee and get going. The food was okay and mussel sauce was delicious but quite a small portion. Apologies belatedly offered when we paid the bill and left were not especially sincere nor overly effusive. This is obviously what passes for normal service t The Star and therefore not considered anything out of the ordinary. Would not recommend and indeed as we left, we were well placed to warn some people just coming in of the lengthy delays they would be facing since the staff clearly wouldn 't. One lady mentioned she was only wanting soup, so we were of course well placed to tell her that particular item was off the menu. A great pity we didn 't just bring sandwiches."
