"Really unfortunate our last experience was so poor compared to when we visited in the summer. Visited as a family on a Sunday and was surprised there was seating for us, we were grateful. Lovely atmosphere and nicely decorated. No staff members to be found but sign said to help ourselves to a table. Don’t like the ordering at the bar thing but that’s personal preference; however makes it feel very much like a Wetherspoons. After ordering, we asked where our food was as we were waiting more than 40 minutes. It came a few minutes later. Kids chicken and chips, absolutely fine. My partner’s steak was beautifully cooked to his preference and seasoned well. I ordered a burger which stayed it was “smothered in melted cheese”. Two slices of cold cheese on top, with a burnt to a crisp burger bun underneath. How they thought it was okay to serve this is beyond me. I took it to the bar, got an apology muttered at me. Two minutes later it came back with a fresh bun, but everything else plonked on top, clearly microwaved as was overly hot and the cheese shrivelled up and dry. Undercooked soggy bacon on top, way too salty. One of the worst burgers I’ve ever had (which after having a quick scan through the reviews, I’m not the only one). Ordered desserts, which were very good. Christmas pudding stayed it came with a brandy sauce, my partner asked if it was a creamy sauce. The woman behind the counter had no idea at all. What turned up was custard? Which was unusual. But the actual Christmas pudding was lovely. Think we will try again but hope the mounting negative reviews are listened to. It’s such a good spot, especially in summer so would be a waste if the quality didn’t match."

"I come to Sowerby Bridge quiet often and whenever I do I always visit this cafe for coffee and something to eat as I like the atmosphere. Their coffee isn’t too bad and the food is okay. I usually order a tuna panini but yesterday I wanted to try something different so I ordered nachos alongside my panini. The waitress did explain that it came with chili which I assumed was chili pepper or Jalepeanos. To my disappointment, I was severed a plate of nachos with BEEF ON TOP OF THE NACHOS. When the food arrived I asked what was on top of the nachos. One of the waitresses explained that it had “cheese and beans” but didn’t bother mentioning that there was BEEF on top of it. I didn’t question why they hadn’t informed me that nachos were served with beef whilst I was ordering, as I wanted to double check the menu before speaking to them in case I had misread the word beef and confused it for something else like... erm... chili (silly me.... . I went down after I had finished my panini and coffee and asked to look at the menu. I then asked the waitress why the menu didn’t state that the nachos came with beef. She replied “I explained that it came with chili”, to which I responded that I assumed chili was chili pepper or Jalepeanos. The woman looked at me dumbfounded and confused. I mean, how do you expect me to know that something is served with beef if your menu doesn’t specifically mention the word ‘BEEF’?! At this point another tall blonde waitress came over and interjected and rudely told me that the nachos came with “chili.. which means chili con carne... which most people understand is beef” and that ‘that there’s nothing they can do about it’. I’d like to add that the menu did not state ‘con carne’ anywhere and only stated the word ‘chili’. You can’t expect ALL customers to know that chili means beef. **** joke if you ask me. I explained that I did not know that chili actually meant beef and suggested that perhaps their menu should clearly state the ingredients so that their customers know what they’re ordering. This was a polite suggestion but the tall blond woman sarcastically replied “well, we’ll update it when we get new menus!” and ignored me. At this point I was irritated by the lack of manners and common courtesy displayed. In fact, I was shocked, horrified, mortified...I told the woman that I was a regular customer whenever I visited Sowerby Bridge and that on this occasion I was disappointed with the service. She responded by telling me that “if you were a regular customer you would know that chili means beef. All of our regular customers know that chili means beef”. How patronising. At this point there were a couple of customers waiting to be served but I wasn’t going to budge until I was provided with a refund, which I had asked for twice and had been refused. Initially I didn’t even want a refund. I simply went down to explain that the ingredients weren’t made clear, but her response was so rude and patronising. In the end she reluctantly gave me a refund. Had she dealt with this nicely, offered me a refund to begin with OR EVEN JUST AN APOLOGY OR AN ATTEMPT TO PUT THINGS RIGHT, I wouldn’t have left this review. But I had time on my hands today and was feeling petty so here we are.... bad manners, bad service and an overall a bad experience that I’ll be sure to tell others about...."

"If the site would let me give this place a 5 star then I would !! If you live in Halifax you have to try this place and if you live further afield then it’s worth the journey trust me !!! They cater for absolutely everybody. I’m a vegan and a coeliac so it’s not always easy to find somewhere that’s accommodating but accommodating and friendly is exactly what the Winterburn is. There more than happy to answer any questions about the menu and the landlady and landlord Lucy and Ozzy will come to your table and bend over backwards to cater and recommend anything you need, it’s such a lovely and relaxed atmosphere. Everything is clearly printed on the menu and all the vegan options are there in front of you from the start so you don’t have to ask for a special menu and feel like an after thought. Let’s talk about the delicious food. Starters I had the soup lovely mushroom and nice and thick. Mains a beautiful mushroom risotto, plenty of flavour and a wonderful mix of wild mushrooms absolutely beautiful and for desserts a gluten free, vegan chocolate fudge cake with vegan ice cream absolutely delicious and something I certainly wasn’t expecting, they have lots of options for everyone and also asked about vegan recipes as there always looking to change things up and add more options to the menu. Great atmosphere great owners and staff and fantastic well presented food, also a great selection of vegan drinks, I would recommend this little gem to anyone and will certainly be making it my regular spot. I would recommend booking"
