"This is an oddity - the name of the establishment translates as "At the bearded winemakers" - and indeed it is the house of the bearded winemaker - and opens only at certain times of the year. Check the website. Set in a Hansel and Gretel pretty village - you go down the side of the house and through a wooden door to find yourself in a barn, with long wooden tables, a bar area and the friendly winemaker and his wife on hand to greet you.The menu is small but the portions are large (you can order half portions) This is typical home-cooked German food - filling and comforting on a wet cold night at the end of October. I had Pork Schnitzel - three large pieces of meat with a piece of lettuce and a bowl of bread, but we shared a side salad whilst my dining companion had a "small" portion of beef (two big slices) with a large gherkin and creamed homemade horseradish sauce that packed a punch. The dessert was a delicious homemade apple type pancake - thin dough topped with apple rings with a blob of raspberry jam in the middle and sprinkled with cinammon. Absolutely delicious. There is no beer on the menu - but of course there is lots of wine and you can buy ridiculously cheap bottles to take home with you.I can think of nothing like this in the UK. A working family vineyard with an occasional restaurant serving simple home-made food. Fantastic."
