"After searching for a place for lunch with gluten and dairy free options, we found the Lemon Tree as a place to go on our first trip to Penrith. We met up with a friend for coffee/tea there, and decided to go back for lunch. The staff were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable on their allergens, even pointing out that the tartare sauce had cream in after it was ordered. Two of us had the steak, vegetables and fried potatoes, and one had the sea-bass, vegetables and boiled potatoes, all off the specials menus for the day. It was nice to have a choice of mains for the gluten and dairy free, and the food was all freshly cooked and hot. The gluten and dairy free orange and almond cake was home made and delicious, as was the home made fruit bread and butter (this could also have been gluten free as an option). For drinks, the home made lemonade was amazing, as was the oat milk latte, and the tea was a generous pot of strong brew with separate water served. We would very happily go back there again any time we are in Penrith."

I visit The Lemon Tree Bistro regularly. The food is fantastic and the service is top-notch. I especially love their steaks with fresh vegetables.

Came across this place unexpectedly. Although dogs are not allowed inside, there is seating outside which is in an arcade and under cover. The food was delicious and the service 5 star. Thank you.

Excellent breakfast at a halfway point on a trip to Scotland, well worth the 10 minute diversion from the motorway. Cafe was surprisingly quiet for such a good breakfast, plenty of regulars were chatty with the owner. Voir le carte

Chef Henry and his wife Helen own the business. Food has always been excellent. Quality, presentation and value are excellent. Today I had Henry's own Steak Pie (no kidney) and home made Lemon Cheesecake (to die for) with a pot of tea.

We love going to this cafe in Penrith for lunch. Our favorite dishes are the homemade steak pie with vegetables and potato chips, as well as the vegetarian quiche with salad and potato chips. The staff always make us feel welcome and we always enjoy our meals. Thank you!

Stopped off here for lunch on way home to Scotland, having good memories of this cafe from a visit several years ago. We were glad to find that it was still open and serving a wide variety of meal and snack options including lots of gluten free choices which pleased my husband who has coeliac disease. Fresh home-made food at excellent prices, and licensed too! Voir le carte

During our annual visit to Keswick we decided to give Penrith another try. Clearly there had been changes in the town and we had to ask about somewhere to eat. Locals recommended The Lemon Tree and they proved to be correct. The service was good and the meals well prepared mine being vegetarian. We shared a large sweet and had T for two. We enjoyed our visit, and if we return to Penrith in the future, we will visit The Lemon Tree again.

On the first Tuesday in November, my trip to Keswick was delayed by an unexpected change in the bus timetable (new departure time 9am, previously 9.15am). With an hour to spare, I went into town for a coffee and ended up at The Lemon Tree. I opted for the reasonably priced smaller breakfast which included 3 thick bacon rashers, a large fried egg, a meaty sausage, a large tomato, and delicious tomato sauce. It was absolutely fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be returning for breakfast in the future.

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
