"A beautiful escape with an alpine ambiance in northern Umberland. This hotel offers a lovely hot bath and stunning views of the river and surrounding hills right from your window. The room was warm and the bed comfortable, ensuring a very restful night's sleep. The location is quiet, wild, and remote, truly a hidden gem in the UK that should be experienced. The hotel and pub would benefit from a catchy sign at the entrance to enhance the atmosphere. Be sure to visit the nearby large church, which is very interesting."

Note under new ownership the food is really excellent and the service polite and prompt. They work hard to accommodate any dietary requirements. The beer is good too.

Great food, good location for Hadrian's Wall walking. The staff were friendly. There is parking outside on the forecourt for about 10/12 vehicles. Can get a little crowded at weekends.

We spent two nights at the end of our holiday in Scotland, and The Elks Head provided a wonderful conclusion to our trip. Our room had beautiful views of the river, and both the dining experience and service were exceptional. I highly recommend staying at this pub, which is under new management.

Under new management, this restaurant offers an absolutely brilliant dining experience. The seasonal dishes are prepared to the highest standard, featuring items like scallops with coral sauce, smoked venison spine, and house-cured trout. If they can maintain this quality, then the Elk's Head is poised for great things ahead.

we have booked a very last minute with the elk’s head, and I have to say that they don’t come before. they have recently taken over the leasing contract and I wish them a lot of success. I'm sure with the amount of thinking and work that she's in the pub, she'd be a nice time when they stay. we also took our dog and they were very welcome.

If you're looking for a tip, there's a lovely walking path along the River Allan leading to Staward Gorge nearby. You can park on either side of the large stone bridge. As for the food, we enjoyed a beef Sunday dinner, along with salmon and crab cakes featuring samphire. Everything was top-notch and felt like a real indulgence! We're so glad we discovered this gem. A couple of additional highlights: there are beautiful walks along the River Allan to Staward Gorge, and the Allan Banks National Trust site offers spectacular views of the crags, tall trees, and the river.
