"Birthday evening with friends on Sunday, June, I chose chicken with mushroom sauce. Smallest portion of chicken I have ever been served. On ordering I was told new potatoes were available but when meal was served there was only roasties which I declined....I also specifically asked if the vegetables had any butter in them (for health reasons) and was assured that they did not. The vegetables that were served looked as though they had lost most of their colour and tasted as though they had been cooked and kept warm all day, they were also coated in butter. My Son chose a steak which he had difficulty cutting into and even more difficulty chewing and consequently could not eat. He asked a friend that was with us to try it and they also could not chew it. Another member of our party chose the beef dinner, this meat was also so tough he couldn't eat it, the rest of the dinner was tasteless and the yorkshire pudding was like a lump of concrete and he left his whole meal. At the end of the meal the gravy had set like concrete and the gravy boat could be tipped on end with no gravy running out at all. May I add that the waitress throughout was apologetic, proffessional and kept passing our comments onto, the Chef (I asssume), and offered alternatives. However, the evening by this time was ruined (somebody's birthday may I add). The meal was booked in advance, so there can be no excuse for this. Worst meal I have ever had and shall not be returning or recommending."

Had an excellent Sunday lunch at the Darwin Room. Meat and vegetables were cooked to perfection, staff were efficient and pleasant. Beautiful dining room, nicely presented tables and enough room left between the tables for privacy. Wonderful sea views enhanced the experience. Will definately return

Went for a celebration meal to the darwin room, had the risotto for starters and the belly pork for main, I thought it was very tasty indeed and would defiantly revisit. Should be ranked higher on trip advisor! Only problem was bigger portions would be...better but having said that I am quite greedy. Voir le carte

Although all our food choices were great, service left a little to be desired. No wine list. House wine awful. Next wine chosen from bottles held by waitress. Much nicer but then ran out of that wine. Wine was warm when it came to...the table too. Dessert menu on the wall hidden behind a Christmas tree. Initially told we may have to wait for our meal due to serving a large party.....thats not my problem. No cointreau in the bar. humph. Despite this will be back as food good value for money.

I visited this restaurant in February with my dad. I enjoyed goat cheese and risotto balls with salsa, which were delicious. Then, I had a crab cake with nice, crispy chips. My father had soup followed by pork belly. The portions were a great value. The restaurant is beautiful, but I felt sorry for the waitresses as they seemed overwhelmed. Another person helping out would have made a big difference. I have dined at top restaurants in the Northeast, and this place is just as good, if not better, than those in Newcastle with awards. I will definitely be returning.

My son recommended that we try this restaurant, as it had been a while since my last visit. We were quickly seated by one of the busiest waiters I have ever seen, who ran back and forth between the kitchen and dining area. I started with a delicious pint of Caffreys, and although some might find the service a bit slow, I enjoyed a cozy afternoon. I ordered the soup, which was only lukewarm - I prefer my soup to be piping hot. However, the dish of black pudding on a bed of bouncing was sensational. My son wanted to share dessert, but I was too full from my fish. I loved the atmosphere of the building and the restaurant. Voir le carte

Four of went for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant was very quiet ,I guess because it was just after the Xmas and New Year festivities .The service was friendly with young waitresses who were cheerfull and out to please. We were asked about pre dinner drinks...and were served quickly. Our starters came and we looked and tasted great.I had black pudding with soft cheese and salad and it was tasty and filling .Two others had kidneys on a crouton with a delicious sauce (I tasted .All of us were satisfied .(One had declined a starter) For mains we had a good choice .I tried the sea bass on a fishy risotto with a salad dressing .two had cod with a red wine sauce and one had a pork steak .We h...

I can't understand why this restaurant isn't busy every night. It is unbeatable, not only for value, but for the excellent quality of the food. Four of us dined here recently. Three of us started with the slightly seasoned chicken livers, which were cooked to perfection and delicious. The other appetizer was gently cured king prawns, both the taste and presentation were outstanding. I recommended the lamb to two of my friends, while another had the chicken dish, and I opted for the fish with a delicious sauce. The dishes were served with well-cooked vegetables and homemade chips. The lamb and chicken dishes were both deemed delicious, and my fish was superb. We enjoyed a bottle of house red...

"Visited this weekend for a family celebration and had an unremarkable experience. Decor of establishment was rather nice. Admittedly, we were a large booking of 17 individuals and this can be challenging to manage and organise for such a small establishment. The mature gentleman was rather rude to our host whom asked for an additional chair for the party as we were one short despite finalising numbers as agreed earlier in the afternoon. This is no way an appropriate manner to treat guests and clearly set a bad example for his staff as well as the wrong tone for the evening ahead. Guests were not even properly seated before being hounded for their drinks order despite not being given a drinks menu. Upon asking about cocktails to the waitress whom was pleasant she was unable to give the full selection just the three she knew of the top of her head that were the standard run of the mill selection. To give full credit to her fo honest regarding the diaquiries before we ordered them in. The cocktails (passion fruit martini and cosmopolitan's) ordered were disappointing as they tasted watered down and lacked a bang. Don't understand why one of the passion fruit martinis was brought out in a drinks glass which was rather random. Drinks orders were taken on an ad hoc basis with the waiting staff not taking a full tables order walking away as people attempted to give their drinks order, unintentional maybe? We were rushed to give our starters/mains orders all of which came promptly and all guests received the correct order. The waiting staff shouted out food orders from the top of the table to identify who's order was who's. The pasta based dishes were pleasantly enjoyed yet the pizzas and parmesans proved to be somewhat vanilla. Not all guests had properly finished eating their meals before the gentlemen asked if he could remove plates before receiving an answer from the full table resulting in some guests to not finish their meals. We were not offered a deserts menu once they removed dishes from the table. We had second hand embarrassment for an additional family party whom were having a celebration meal at the restaurant. The party had started to get settled at the table putting out their balloons etc when the mature gent stormed over barking at them to move as he shoved table and chairs across the restaurant. This clearly made them feel uncomfortable as was noticed and commented by the service users of the restaurant. The waiting staff plonked the celebration cakes on the table one of which didn't even go to the correct individual. NO SPECIAL MEMORY OR MAGICAL MOMENT TO BE HAD FOR A 18TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. It would have been nice if they had asked before bringing it out as some of our party partially missed out on the occasion. The bill was given to the wrong individual instead of the host which allowed for everyone to see the bill when this was an private affair. To be perfectly honest we visited a few months earlier and had a disappointing experience but with better service. Linthorpe Road is bursting with alternative, superior, independent eateries that I would highly recommend instead."
