"We thought we'd like to revisit a favourite German dish - a traditional Eisbein - an absolutely delicious slow cooked, pork knuckle.Staying nearby, we went to the local Ratskeller Restaurant, Charlottenburg. I think we found the Fawlty Towers of Germany. When we walked in, we should have realised there was something amiss. There was no one else in the restaurant, bar a family of Asians. The decor and setting of the restaurant was spectacular, and we thought 'how bad could it be'? The waitress was quite pleasant and we ordered our entree to share and then the much awaited Eisbein. Our crumbed camembert was not bad, although why it was served with whipped cream, toast and butter was a bit beyond me. We thought it must have been a German thing.A cavalcade of people started to come by our table from the street, and then back again. We summised that they were passing through the restaurant to use the toilet. Right through the restaurant. Then came the piece de resistance - the Eisbein. Now, I have had some amazing roasted pork knuckles in my time but this was an absolute horror. It was a Boiled.Pork.Knuckle. The appearance was enough to put you off but we had a go anyway. Digging through the rubbery, fatty skin was fairly offputting, and once through, the pork was meh, kinda tasteless in a boiled pork kind of way. Luckily we got one to share, along with some boiled potatoes which came with the dish. So, politely we declined dessert and asked for the bill. With 2 drinks each, one entree and one pork, the bill came to 45 Euros. I gave the waitress a 50 note and waited for change. She put the money in her little pouch, zipped it up and left. We were gobsmacked! I usually leave a tip for a good meal and service but for it to be just assumed and taken .. . . . . . not a good look.We just left with a bad taste in our mouth, both from the meal and the service.Given that we'd eaten at the tiny little Trattoria down the street for a couple of nights (great meal and drinks for 10 Euro), tonight's meal was a huge disappointment."
