"A lovely pub in a pretty village outside Stroud, The Bear Inn has recently been taken over by new owners. I understand from regulars to whom we spoke that there was some trepidation about their arrival, because the previous landlord and landlady had set a fairly high bar for food and drink. They need not have worried. The food at The Bear is absolutely excellent; genuinely good for a pub even in this area of decent pubs. The beer (I had Timothy Taylor's Landlord and the wine are of equal quality. I like to be honest in my reviews so I will mention a couple of things I didn't like. The telephone ringer and the service chimes from the kitchen are loud and intrusive; this is easily fixed, of course, and I'm sure it's something they will get around to. The Christmas decorations are blue and white, which lends a harsh lighting to the room; red would have been nicer and softer. Again, this is only temporary. I have visited the Bear a number of times over the years and at this time of year the large open fire in the main bar is always a beautiful and cosy feature; it's not currently being used and I think that is a huge shame. (The pub is warm, though, and there is a log burner in the second bar. I hope they'll start the fire again. My main complaint is the music playing in the background; I can go to any Beefeater or town pub and listen to Mariah Carey, or ACDC (though I wouldn't , but this is a charming village pub with clear aspirations to be something special (as the food demonstrates . It's not (on two visits a million miles away from a Michelin star; which Michelin Star resaurant would have this kind of music on? I would prefer none at all, and just the gentle hubbub of conversation and laughter, but if there has to be some couldn't it be something more in keeping with the age and general ambience of The Bear? A little Louis Armstrong, maybe? Or classical music? Again, I'm sure this can be addressed once they find their feet. Please don't let these quibbles put you off. We had a great dinner in a lovely pub with nice staff and chatty locals. Highly recommended."

"The reviews, to put it mildly are very generous. I know the pub trade has had a tough time,,, But this pub needs help. On entry, a tired pub, with a basic selection of beers. The food menu, is grim reading, Food a teenager could whip up, warm up real easy. The best selection we made wasthe Cheesy nachos served with homemade salsa, guacamole and sour cream dip A good one to share and tasty. £7.95 My main, The unique, home-cooked 3 Shu Pie is made up of 3 different sections. In the first is bubbling cauliflower/broccoli cheese, the middle is made of creamy mashed potato with vegetables folded in and the final section is a choice of one of our delicious fillings In this case steak and Kidney all topped with a soggy Filo Pastry lid In reality, This ranks as the WORST PUB pie i have EVER been served. A 2 in one pie can work, 3 in one, No way ever. In this case, after lifting the naff filo lid, there is nothinf=g but stodge, The cauliuflower section is poor, The mash basic, and the bit you go for a meat pie, in this case steak and Kidney, total rip off, Maybe .50p of meat at most, Because its now less than a 1/3rd of the pie, it need to be damned good, the gravy runny and bland, The steak tiny sugar cude sized bits, ie i=f you took a decent sized chunk, cut it up, there would be enough for 2 pies i'd say. What brings this home was last week i was in Scarborough, And stopped at a petrol staion, Where i bought a £2 Steak pie to die for, It had 4 times the meat, And was a million times better than this £13.45 version. Sorry if sounding like a mad man, But steak and ale pies have to be right, its the law ! Our other meal was the Frozen beer battered haddock, 4/10 The Kitchen was ULTRA Slow, So if planning a get together, bring a party game or something"

"I got a bit tired of going to my usual curry take away and decided to google take aways around Stroud for an alternative. nargis Tandoori ranked highly on the reviews in the search. So I plucked the courage picked up the phone and ordered away a mini feast of vegetarian delights. The man on the other end of the phone was well spoken and charmingly courteous. The food will be ready in the usual half an hour (not sure how this has come about as the optimal waiting choice)Having driven and parked in the car park opposite the police station, a momentary saunter and you’re confronted by a tiny understated Nargis Tandoori. The door was shut making you thing they may not be open. On trying the door they were! The waiting room really does look like one taken from a real Indian family: stark walls, a telly with an Indian malodramatic drama, the bizarre religious cheap prints and the obligatory security camera behind the make-shift counter with the diy cables in open view. A few minutes in and a man appears from a predominately hidden set of stairs. He is generous and offers me free samosas with the meal and waives the cost of an extra Nan bread. He’s willing me to like this food. I’m won over The food you ask. What about the **** food. Was it any good? Here I’m afraid things take a turn. The chick peas were flavourless. The vegetables pakoras were non greasy nice but again with little flavour. The spinach and cheese and cauliflower sides were smothered in powdered ginger and the speciality veggie roshunwalla had obvious frozen baby carrots and more of the powdered ginger after tastes. I must say I felt let down by the food. Usually I look forward to the left overs the next day but on this occasion it will be a chore or a decision to accept my losses and dump it in the bin. The range of spice flavours was that limiting. It is a shame since I was so willing it to be better based on the reviews and the lovely man who served me."
