"I struggle to understand how this place is the 4th best rated restaurant in the Barnstaple area, as based on my visit it is mediocre at best. My feelings are coloured partly by the service which was outwardly friendly but overall fairly average and also by some oddly long wait times. As to the food, it was certainly acceptable , but the pricing is at a level that could best be described as grasping relative to what is offered. Perhaps the Castle Inn will argue their burgers are made in house, but their overly minced texture is far more representative of mass produced or frozen patties. At £16.50 the value of that is questionable despite an abundance of (relatively over cooked) chips. The fish and chips were so-so, the Mac Cheese the relative stand out. And then there is the white bait... five individual white bait on a few undressed salad leaves for £7.75 is a value proposition I would struggle with in a pub paying London rents, let alone out here. Perhaps there are limited options in this area hence the high rating ... but I have a doubt that is the case. Overall I would visit again to sup a pint in the gorgeous public bar, but I couldn 't recommend eating here."

"If I could have given this restaurant 3 1/2 stars, I would. However I have generously marked up. My husband and my son really enjoyed their food, however I was disappointed. My starter of gravadlax was lovely and fresh and I really enjoyed it. However my main, sea bass, (although in a beautiful sauce with lovely samphire, was pinky brown and tough. I don’t know what was wrong with it, I have never had sea bass like that before. Maybe it had been frozen previously or wasn’t very fresh. They tried to cook it some more but it was still the same. To be fair I was not charged for this item, however I had no real main course to eat and was mostly sat watching my husband and son! My second mistake was to order the panna cotta for dessert. I’ve never had such a bland, watery panna cotta, with a weird texture. Taking pity on me, my husband swapped and gave me his dessert. I can’t remember the name of what it was but it was maybe a lemon curd tart with some kind of dark fruit? Anyway, it was absolutely delicious. Tangy scrumptious filling and lovely pastry. So at least I got to eat something nice! The proprietor and staff were lovely to us and our dog. I’m afraid I wouldn’t go back though."

"I have never tried so delicious, fresh, crispy, well cut fish and chips in my life! my man originates from a fishing town in Europe, so he really understands what a big fish and chips is. I will be honest with them his pretty hard to please him, we have tried many places all over the country and none of them was so great! Personally I myself, I have no pleasure on fish and chips, but I must say after I fish in top chippy and chips became a real joy for me! I have never tried so delicious, fresh, crispy, well cut fish and chips in my life! the fish was delicious, you could say it was fresh and the coating was somewhat amazing! it is not olny eating that impressed us, the personal was absolutely true host! we had a 3 year old daughter with us and they were so friendly, giving her a free softdrink. the shop is next to the village church and there is a picnic table, so they can simply eat and enjoy beautiful scenery while eating! I will be honest with them, his old I was at a place like this, where the food quality is important, not bite and the business personal cares for them. his unique place and I wish them all good for success in the future. "Underwhelming second time round. We first came back in 2020, and the food was authentic and flavours on point. It has been a talking point with my partner and we knew when we came back to Devon for our mini break away, we just had to come to the thai again, having had such good experience the last time. This time round, seems a massive drop in quality? The food tasted bland. And the prices aren’t cheap either. i don’t mind paying higher prices but I expect top notch food for it. Portion of rice very small, massaman was super runny, like they had watered it down to make more sauce but had diluted the flavour? Didnt feel authentic. No potatoes, no cashews or peanuts. Pad thai again didnt have much flavour to it. Satay barely tasted like peanuts. I looked at photos of the food from 2020 and it’s like they’ve either changed owners or the chef. Or maybe they’re just penny pinching on ingredients these days? If i could liken this meal to any song Shania Twain’s “that don’t impress me much!” comes to mind!!"

"I found this little jewel on a week of thirsty. eating is amazingly full of taste and generous portions. had here at three different days of meal, chorizo huhn with white bbq sauce huh korma huge hit on our first visit, came the following day for Sunday roast, just over in a pudding after and our last night we treated us on the homemade burger with speckkäse again followed by pudding. fabulous, food-friendly staff that they feel very welcome. perfect balance between restaurantbar. will definitely be back when we are back in the opposite."

"We've been enjoying the food and atmosphere of the Blue Groove since it opened and we just love it. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is excellent. "The service was outstanding. Greeted as we approached the entrance (by Sean) who looked after us the entire evening like we the only guests, accommodating our needs and food intolerance's. I expected the menu to have to be tailored but every effort was made not...to omit but substitute as close to the original order (Fried onions for onions) Also, when one of the young girls wasn't sure of smoked sauce flavour, a sample was brought from the kitchen for out approval and subsequent order. Food and portions were delicious and large and I'd say fairly priced based on quality and size. (If I were to be ultra picky I'd say the Merlot was not as full bodied as I'd prefer I should have gone for a Malbec) The atmosphere was warm and family friendly. Sean even offered to help take our photos to be added to our holiday. I've never had service this good. Best get there early and book a table. The place started fill after we arrived. Definite recommendation."

"We left absolutely full, and very happy. My daughter had the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup...they were HUGE, 3 massive pancakes with 2 rashers of bacon, butter and a jug of syrup. She couldn't finish it, although it was so tasty. I had the chicken salad, again a big bowl full generous with the chicken and a nice mixed salad with plenty of tomatoes and peppers etc in it too. Also, an Oreo milkshake and a coffee . The only disappointment was the coffee which I found to be slightly bitter for my taste, but others may be fine with it, just a personal taste/preference thing. Service was quick, and staff friendly. I hope it is busy for them, it's a bit tucked away up in the High Street for a lot of the tourist trade who seem to stay down by the Quay, it's well worthwhile going up to the High Street to visit this place."

"We popped into this pub for a drink whilst travelling around North Devon (staying in Woolacombe . It is a visually a very attractive pub with a thatched roof. We checked to see if dogs were welcome and the staff confirmed they were (except the designated restaurant although there is a dining section in the bar area where you can take dogs . We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived. The range of drinks are great and prices reasonable. We enjoyed it so much that we went back the next day for their Carvery lunch. WOW it is awesome!! A choice of lamb, turkey and pork was on offer that day, and a generous portion given. A superb selection of vegetables were on offer with yorkies, gravy and sauces. All for £10.95. The very best carvery we have had for a long time (if not ever! . Highly recommended for just a drink and/or food as well."

"Good food. Good service. I used to go weekly but only go for special occasions now as it's got too expensive. I love their curry but have to ask for no peppers, no carrots. "This was a party of six for dinner, so we had 18 dishes across 3 courses. Overall opinion is that the food was good, with mushroom soup (of the day), the Exmoor ribeye, and the sticky toffee pudding gaining the best comments. Vegetarian curry was also good, but that diner would have liked the option to add chicken or fish protein to that dish. Venue was full and lively, with enough background noise from other diners to feel you weren’t being listened to. The only gripe I had was that the table mats were stuck to the table, meaning that as the tables are cleaned between covers, the mats are not being moved and the table thoroughly cleaned. Minor, but worth mentioning. Staff were polite and attentive, and the hotel itself is positioned with a wonderful view of the sea. Definitely worth a second visit."

"had breakfast here recently and can not have enough of it rave. the chorizo bbq beans were a manifestation as the wurstpatty (it was massiw) the haash-braun bites were irritating and crispy on the outside and nicely fluffy on the inside. portions were mega and the monday rabatt was a very welcome surprise, but I would have paid happily full price as it was worth every penny. will certainly be back."

"Nipped in for a quick pint while holidaying in Lynton over Easter. Pub was empty just before dinner time on a Wednesday except for a local at the bar. Landlady wasn't particularly welcoming and moaned about the cost of me paying by contactless. Pub is pretty run down and needs either a steam cleaning or a refurb. No chef currently but I wouldn't risk eating there if there was. Pint of Tribute was cloudy and full of floaters. Avoid."

"we loved it so much choice on the separate vegan menu! it was hard to choose, but we went with the bbq lentil burger with chips and the bohnen chili with rice and one side garlauchbrot. we all enjoyed eating! we shared the half of the courts. the personal was friendly and informative. they were happy to check with the cook. the bar is dog and family friendly. we had waited for about 20 or 30 minutes to eat, which made us nothing at all. actually we enjoyed our visit so much that we have reserved a table for Thursdays Curry Night when all veggie curries are vegan! we look forward to our return visit. we recommend a visit if they are in the opposite."

"Slightly disappointed by tonight's experience. After purchasing drinks we were informed that they were not catering for walk ins for dinner due to an unexpected large party arriving and otherwise occupying the kitchen. I felt more could have been done to notify us of this change of service. There was no signage , no social media post and no proactive disclosure by the staff before we sat down. My mother is diabetic and therefore needs to eat at specific times, I had called ahead to enquire if there was availability and was not advised to make a booking. I understand the pressures of working in a kitchen but I would always strive to accommodate everyone to the best of my ability , perhaps advising of a delay in service or hold on food orders. People appreciate and are understanding of the challenges dinner service may be experiencing if there is transparency. It would not deter me from returning as the food is typically of a good quality and the general atmosphere and views are lovely also."

"A brilliant little inn! Arrived later than the posted check in time, but let the innkeepers know. They accommodated us very well and understood we would be travelling a long way. Arrived around 2130 and they had unfortunately suffered a power cut, to no fault of their own. We were greeted very politely and was shown to our room via torchlight. The owners couldn’t have been more apologetic about the power failure but nevertheless the room was spotless, neat and tidy. We came down to the bar for drinks and had some lovely draught cider. The bar was full of friendly people and during our drinks the power was restored. Our sleep was very peaceful and comfortable with complimentary tea and coffee with fresh milk. Fresh orange juice was also available. The shower/toilet was very modern with a lovely warm shower and shampoo included. Our towels were very clean and soft, which matched the supplied house coats found in the cupboard. Breakfast was served at 8am. With cereals, fruit, yogurt and berries on the bar. Our waitress came over and took our hot breakfast order. Available was bacon, sausage, egg, hogs pudding, mushroom, beans, toast etc. Breakfast was very nice and served in good time. Checkout was easy and would have loved to have stayed a second night but I was away on business. I will definitely stay again as it is great value for money. Thank you!"
