"And it happened that our business friends came from NRW to Kiel to share with us and spend a nice evening with good food. As usual for two years, they had attended Hotel Birke Quartier, logically we met at the hotel bar in the evening and then we went to the restaurant. Operation The younger staff in the service was in high shape tonight, I did not notice any mistake. Even the beverage delivery worked very fast, unlike the previous visit. We were only in a small round with four people, one of whom forgot the appetizer. We ordered twice the fish soup I had in very good memory, and once the “Seal variation with nuts and advised Parmesan” in the small version (6.80 € ), the customer was warned by the service employee that it was not just a small additional salad. As main dishes were ordered: once the daily offer: “Steaks from the deer, pink fried, with bacon carrot and herbal potato stump”, whereby the buyer exchanged the supplements: instead of rose cabbage, he ordered red cabbage and roasted potatoes instead of stitch bed potatoes. Two other participants ordered fish: “Brased cod with colorful fried cabbage and frying potatoes” (19,90 € and „Steinbeißerfilet vom Grill mit Safransauce auf knusprigen Black Rooten und Weißweinrisotto“ (22,80 €). All main dishes with the exception of the daily offer came from the weekly ticket shortly after the order, an operation brought every guest a small part of a fiery beef salad as a greeting from the kitchen. After dessert and associated dishes it was only a moment until the soups and salads were served. As already announced by the service, the salad proved to be much too large for an appetizer, but was called very good and tasty. Anyway, the fish soup was very good, strong and with delicate anise, as I remembered and as described by the foreman. Then a little later the main dishes: The daily offer came with three slices from the deer lobe, fried on the outside, inside (dark pink and butterfly. The fish fillets on the other plates not only looked good, they were very praised by the two participants. And last but not least my record with the parts of the goose: At first glance, the pieces of meat looked very dark, suggesting that they could be very dry. But far missed, all pieces of meat were delicate and juicy, strong in taste, and harmonized excellent on cauliflower and slices of napkin noodles. Although we were actually well saturated by the portions, after some time the desire for a dessert was raining. The “Great Vanilla Cream Brûlée” was ordered twice with orange salad and vanilla ice cream (7,80 €), once “Crêpe filled with cherry sauce, with vanilla parfait” (7,50 € and once the “Dessertvariation Fischers Fritz – Von alles Besten” (8,50 €). The desserts were brought after a short time, the cream glasses were decorated in a relatively large bowl with orange fillets and vanilla ice cream, as well as the crêpe with cherry batch according to the standard, but were quite delicious. As with the appetizer, the colleague also weakened in Dessert variant, and only two of the about six small portions were able to do the honor, and there was already a clear answer from the neighboring colleagues. I refer to my earlier reviews and also to Mr ryanair456, where the restaurant is sufficiently described. Cleanliness As always perfect, there was nothing to find out."

"I went to Das Schiffercafe to get some labskaus. I visit Kiel quite often on business and it has become a personal tradition to have this local specialty in a different place each time. When I first arrived, the sight was great - a small house in a row of buildings facing the pier. In front of the restaurant a few middle aged locals were seated, sipping wine, smoking pipes and watching the boats go. I immediately felt this would be a good experience.Inside, a very friendly lady took my order at the counter and told me to seat wherever I wanted. Make no mistake - this is no formal venue, Das Schiffercafe makes you feel right at home. Here you are not a honoured foreign guest - you are family. My order of labskaus and wheat beer arrived shortly and it was everything I would ask for. No fancy presentation but a decent plating made for a filling portion. After a few refreshing sips of beer I dug in and promptly realised I had discovered the best labskaus in Kiel. I spent the rest of the meal, mixing herring, beetroot, fried eggs, pickled cucumbers and cured beef with beets and contemplating the harbour. The experience was as good as the dish and I felt infatuated with the place.Do yourself a favour and go there already, if only to grab a cheap herring sandwich for lunch (herrings are own production, matured in barrels). There might be fancier restaurants, but you'll be hard pressed to find a friendlier place in Kiel."

"We picked this restaurant because being a mixed group of omnivores and a couple of people on a vegan diet (me and the hubby), we thought a mexican would definitely offer both options... and apparently this restaurant is an institution in Kiel (i.e. has been there forever). The atmosphere is what you expect from a tex-mex place. Our waiter was super-friendly, and when I asked if the quinoa patties were vegan, he immediately went on to explain what on the menu was or wasn't or could easily be 'veganised'... I was very impressed. The starters were ready in no time (nachos with salsa and some rather interesting jalapenos chillies filled with peanut butter - hot!), but unfortunately the main course took much longer... a bit too long really (1h30 after our arrival). When it finally arrived, I must say the meat-eaters were very impressed with their kangaroo steak, chicken steak, satay chicken... as for the veggi fajitas... well they were composed of exactly 2 vegetables: baby corn and sweet potatoes (I actually had 2 mini courgette rings, but my husband had none). Since I'm not a big fan of baby corn, I was pretty disappointed. The whole thing tasted nice nevertheless, as the side-dishes (those which the meaty fajitas would also get: i.e. tomatoes, olives, guacamole, refried beans...) were excellent. Other very nice surprise: the bill: 105 Euros for 5 people! Verdict: go for the meat and order some starters (as the food might take a bit long!)"
