"Lets not get territorial my fellow dwellers of Mancunia. We must unite in golden triangular formation with our Pudlian and Chestonian brethren. Together we really are the best region in the country!!! It is thus without a hint of territorial superiority complex I present to you 1539. Look, fact of the matter is, as much as I LOVE Madchester, I 'm a sucker for a visit to Chester and the Pool. It takes me back to our Roman adventure of a trip at school. I have a soft spot for Chester and all it has to offer in its cute little Roman package. To this day I reserve numerous ganders a year wondering the walls of Chester with friends or family to collate my thoughts or share the peaceful nature of the activity. As I do so, one of the images that hover in mind is that of Chester Racecourse. Being not much of a gambler myself I am oblivious to the excitement of racedays, the restaurant attached however is right up my avenue and it is this restaurant that I finally present to you fellow yelpers on this fine tintin snowy day. If I had a pound for the number of browny points I have gained for taking the lady somewhere different for a candle lit dinner I 'd have decent pocket change for a meal here!! The place ooozes va va voom and the glass-fronted restaurant boasts a panoramic view across the racecourse, which is serene even in the winter. The summery months of July and August are perfectly made for the outdoor decking area offering al fresco dining. While it is contemporary British cooking being served here I don 't for once hold it against them. For while I am more inclined towards other worldly cuisines 1539 does serve up grub to my liking. The spiral staircase to the Ruinart is something that will really impress your dinner guests here, as I 've pleasently found in the past. I 've been told its the oldest Champagne House in the world exclusively producing premium champagne since 1729. While majority of you will find this to be irrelevant, frankly I don 't particularly care much either, however history does intrigue me oh so much as you all know. The roof is bang on for pre/post dinner drinks though I wouldn 't say so at this particular juncture of the year, with us going through a North pole faze in the UK. My recommended course of action would be arrival Sunday mid-morning for a walk around the Chester wall concluding at 1539 doorsteps for a spot of Sunday Lunch. At a rudimentary £25 per couple(2 courses) expect a decent helping indeed. Being an avid fan of the Pomegranate , there is a salad which has plenty of it as a starter as well as pear, pistachio and Pant-Ysgawn goats cheese. Good old fish n chips for the main should be rounded off by a nice Vanilla panna cotta avec fresh berries at which point you 'll be good to go for the 2nd leg of your Chester wall walk to the car. That 's just me though, make your own schedule for your visit to Chester and 1539, you will not regrettez pas! Chamon"

"Having been to the Grovesnor before and enjoyed great service and food I was so disappointed by how far it fell short on this visit when we returned with friends. On arrival there was no one at either desk to great us. The restaurant was barely a third full so no excuse of being busy. I had booked a table weeks previous for dinner to find on arrival the table only half laid. Instead of asking us to wait at the bar and providing a drink while this was rectified, we were ushered to sit down and the table laid around us. The was a poor start to an increasingly disappointing evening. Drinks were then offered. My partner asked to taste the beer that was on offer for the evening and we were all served our drinks. However, AT NO POINT DURING THE EVENING did anyone return to find out if he wanted a full pint or something else. For reasons I will outline below, there was no opportunity to get a drink for the rest of the evening so we all had one drink and he had a thimble full. We ordered starters; again fine and the starters were delicious. However, less than 5 minutes later the mains arrived. I asked the staff to take the mains back to the kitchen as we were still eating but they just stood there….we literally had to push our starters to one side to make space for the dinner plates. This is clearly totally unacceptable. We ate as quickly as we could so the food wouldn’t become cold with nobody checking on us, offering drinks or in fact any input at all. Every other table receives copious attention. I just couldn’t understand it. By now we had been in the restaurant for about and hour with three of us having one drink, one a shot glass worth of beer and a rushed meal. Clearly we wouldn’t be ordering pudding and coffee on this occasion. Their service charge was, eventually, removed from the bill but only after asking just leading to embarrassment all round. It seems the staff were totally oblivious to the woeful service that was provided that evening. I very rarely write negative revises and I am just so disappointed that a lovely evening was ruined and cut short. I’m afraid we won’t be returning."
